Ford Focus 2 TI-VCT with LPG

Featured Replies

Hey all!

I"ve had my Ford Focus 2 1.6 TI-VCT (HXDA engine code) converted to run on LPG because of high petrol prices. It has LPG Tech One system and every cylinder has its own injector as close to the petrol injector as possible.

The tech said that if I use it wisely with lower speeds it will last long, but on motorway I should use it with about 110km/h rather than the maximum allowed 130km/h and above that I should switch to petrol.

I've only done about 300kms with LPG but the car runs real nice and smooth on LPG and I don't even notice any lack of power compared to petrol.

So what are you experience with this car running on LPG? Would it run too hot on a 130km/h speed for about 250-300 kms or will it be fine? I wouldn't use it much on motorway, maybe 6-8 times a year. I mostly use it to go to work wich is about daily 20-20 kms

Oh yeah and they said that valve clearences should be checked every 40 000 kms and adjusted if needed

they made a few out of the factory with LPG never seen one

wasn't aware you should keep the top speed down - my understanding was its basically the same performance but 40\% cheaper to run - trouble in the UK is they are ripping out all the LPG pumps as 1) no one uses them 2) making space for e chargers, 3) tax man wants the money, not you

I live in Hungary, there are plenty of LPG pumps and it's half the price of petrol.  LPG burns hotter than petrol that is why they said that I shouldn't go so fast with it because the engine will run hotter on LPG.

I don't know if the factory fitted focuses had maybe differrent valve/valve seats of cylinder head that withstands higher temperatures more.

Three basic things for LPG

The system should be a quality system snd its software should allow the technician to make adjustments.

The installation/conversion should be done nicely and carefully by a trained mechanic.

The lpg system/software should be usually checked and perhaps adjusted at least one or two times after conversion.

If these things are fine. Then most probably the car will have no issue. At least not because of the lpg.

I run a fiesta that is lpg converted from 2014. No issues.

And a focus mk3 1.0 with more power (increased performance) that is converted more than a year now.

No issues on speeds or anything else.

It was converted by one of the best in our country. I will go for a chek up after 2000 kms or two months.

The tech said to go "slower" especially on motorway because LPG burns hotter than petrol. Probablygave me this advice because of valve seat recession.
I don'tthink that a constant/even 130km/h of speed is a huge load on this engine.

I've red that the LPG ECU can manage to inject some petrol as well or alternate injections. Maybe it would be good to have this above a constant 3500RPM? And to make it to switch to petrol over 4000 RPM?

This is what they installed

BTW how much kms did you do on LPG? Have you had adjusted valve clearances on any of them?

No

Fiesta has auto-adjusted hydraulic valves.

Focus doesnt require valve adjustment.

They should be inspected in the future.

Yes this system injects petrol 5-10 per cent on high load.

On the Focuses there are "cups" if I know it right and you can set valve clearances with those, but you have to take out the camshafts as well. I've red that usually they are preatty durable but many gas techs said that those wich were use a lot at high speeds needed adjustments every 40000-60000 kms. But they do run fine since then.

But some people say LPG can burn the cylinder head, or the to of the cylinders too.

Usually required to be inspected every 40000-60000 km.
