Mk2 - Gear Linkage - Binding / Feels Clunky / Not Smooth

Hi can anyone advise how to improve the gear changes on my Focus.

They gear changes seem quite heavy and clunky, not smooth.

Was hoping that maybe the gearbox linkages need greasing up or a part is worn.

I can see the 2 cables that come through the bulkhead then they go into the gearbox at 2 different locations.

Looks like the internal mechanism is not accessible unless gearbox is removed / stripped.

Anyone got any ideas how to improve the gear change action / make it smoother and easier.
