2nd Gear Synchromesh

Featured Replies

So the other day, my gearbox decided not to go into 2nd gear at all. Pulled over and called roadside assistance. AA guy was really helpful and explained he had this same issue in his previous ford transit and is fighting through it on his current transit and that it is the 2nd gear synchromesh. I was of course surprised that he was effectively telling me this is an issue across other models in the Ford fleet. Its only 2nd gear, the other gears are perfectly fine.

Anyhow, I did my own research on other focus' to possibly see if it is something I fix myself (I have a fair share of experience working on cars and gearboxes, being such a car nut). I found people on this forum and other forums having the same issue. I now understand it is a weakness in the gearbox design.

So currently, my car has an extended warranty cover on it. Great news when your gearbox goes ***** up! However, what I am worried about is them arguing and telling me that this is excessive wear caused by myself (mainly a worry bought up by the garage its been booked in at). I havent ground any gears, I'm quite careful about it as I rely on this car a lot being my daily driver. The car has just over 30k miles on it, and I doubt the previous owner "ragged" it. I bought the car with just over 3.5K miles on it. So, I truly believe that I have unfortunately fallen victim to the cheap quality of the gearbox.

My question is, to the people who have encountered this issue, did you get it covered under warranty? If so did they argue with you?

If anyone didn't get this fixed on warranty, do you mind me asking how much it cost? I'm just trying to think of worst case scenario.

Also, roughly how long would a repair like this take? I understand its different for each garage, but I'm kinda car-less while they have the car.

Do Ford know about this issue? I'm just a little bit disappointed as this is the 4th thing that has gone wrong which is an issue on Fords side in terms of their design. Admittedly the other issues have been software/electronic systems related, but this is a big mechanical issue and I'm curious to know if Ford are putting any processes in place to solve these?

Sorry about the long explanation and all the questions, but some help and possibly someone easing my mind would be greatly appreciated.
