Engine cut out. Please help.

Featured Replies

Good evening,

Thank you for any advice in advance.

With my partner today driving her car 2015 fiesta 1.0 eco boost. All of a sudden she says my oil light just flashed and then went back off. Few miles later it happened again then all of a sudden the car stopped. She said it felt sluggish but no vibrations or anything just before hand. I thought I could hear a minuet ticking noise? Not sure coming from front of car while driving.

Oil level is fine as I checked it. Once we got car towed home I had to jump start it from my car as we needed to close the window as the battery had died. We thought we’d give it a try again it turned on but was making an unusual noise so turned it back off.

I’m not mechanic but been looking online at a possible engine seizure? But then it wouldn’t have turned over when we got home?

I also read it could be the oil pump and filter?

Again thank you in advance for advice.

Well if the engine is not 100% scrap you will be the luckiest guy on the planet.

The Oil Pressure light has nothing to do with how much oil is in the engine. Once it comes on you have less than a minute to switch the engine off if you are to stand any chance of saving a 1.0 Ecoboost.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

From the information given does it sound like it’s pretty much ruined? Or is there some other issue that could cause this problem?

Sad to say the problem with the 1.0 Ecoboost engine is well known on this forum (and many others).

The problem is caused by the internal wet timing belt which disintegrates over time. This blocks up the oil pick up in the sump and starves the engine of lubrication. If the wet belt snaps then the pistons will smash in to the valves. In any event the cost of repair and the uncertainty of the engine ever being fully operation again makes it not worth considering.

A brand new 1.0 Ecoboost engine can be supplied and fitted by several independent specialists for about £3300.

Your local Ford dealer will want between £7000 and £8000 for the same engine and install.

Hi again,

Sorry to bother again but you wouldn’t happen to know if you can check if your engine is an interference or non interference engine?

it was a fiesta st line 1.0 eco boost turbo 2015 (3 cylinder)

I read somewhere non interference engines say a belt change every 150K where as non interference is 60-80? But was just looking for your advice please.

Also there was no noise of any kind when it cut out like metal hitting metal etc as I’ve been reading online.

Ecoboost 1.0 engines are interference type.

Thank you once again.

Is it possible for engine not to be seized if there was no loud noise of any kind?

I will check tomorrow if I can turn the engine so I know for definite.

It is very possible that the engine will not be fully seized, but will be extensively damaged due to lack of lubrication.

Thank you,

was just reading up on a partial seize as we slowly coasted to a halt in gear rather than everything locking up and sounding horrible like other peoples messages.

Thanks again.

Why was the battery flat?  Did all the electrics fail when the engine stopped?  Might not be a cambelt issue if so...

Hi There,

Did you end up figuring out what was wrong?

Thanks
