Mk2 FL cluster colour change.

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried to change the colour on the digits by using a transparent coloured foil sandwiched between the dials and the housing? The digits are white as far as I can see so they have no colour interfering from the leds with a blue foil that I am having small plans to use. I have painted the outer cluster housing black now so I am trying to make it a bit less dull. I can't really stand the needles either so thinking of getting the pre-facelift needles as they are less bulky and not chrome plated.

its the leds that need changing done it on my mk 2.5 if your good with an iron you will be ok

These LCDs have an opaque sheet of plastic glued to the back, either yellow/orange or white. Here's a comparison (from the short screen version):

The LEDs in both cases I believe are red, if I recall correctly. Here's a demonstration (using a pic I took a while back) of the importance of the plastic backing sheet being (semi-)opaque.

So you'd need to consider changing the actual backlighting LEDs not just the filter/diffusing plastic sheet.

(I provide an instrument cluster repair service).

Thanks for your replies, but i made myself misunderstood. It's the fuel-, temp-, speedo- and tachogauges i am talking about. As the leds seems to be white there it shouldn't be anything more to it to just put a blue foil behind the dials, that's what i was wondering about if anyone have done this? Obviously not where the redlines are, that would make them some purple-ish i guess.

Ooh I see. Yeah that would probably work I guess.

Indeed the LEDs are white and shine through white portions of the gauge background. Some pics:

I started to look for white dials for my cluster but not much to find. And it's only in mph (with small kph) and I find those dials a bit cluttery to look at.

I think i found only one place where you had options on colours and miles or km but they had a minimum quantity order of five. And i have only one😂

So I think I will stick to the stock and try to make it look a bit nicer.

Are the LEDs on the earlier Mk2 LX cluster white or green?

I would like to change the dials and odometer display from green to orange.

I have changed the heater controls, heated rear screen and window switches to orange. This was done using switches taken from scrapped Mk2s at a breakers.

I'm not sure, I don't think I've got any similar pictures for other types. I'm actually not certain which cluster model it would be. If you can check which model it is from the attached image, I'll see if I have one in my handful of parts units that I can check.

Thanks for the reply.

It is type 2d with the odometer and trip mileage only.

Okay, no I don't have one of those to hand unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. Would an early 2a, b or c be perhaps have similar lighting?
