S-Max Vignale 2017 Hill Start / Pre-Collision Not Available.

Featured Replies

I am getting Hill Start Assist not available, Pre-Collision assist not available, Check Park Pilot, being displayed on the dash. After a few miles the error goes away but would come back maybe an hour later.

I have cleaned all the sensors around the car, including the windscreen, but still get the messages.

I have run a forscan and have 2 issues showing. SASM U3000:96-8a and SESM U20002:9f-0a

I have read in a number of threads that it may be a faulty wheel sensor.

Can anyone provide any pointers on the 2 error codes that might help.

Thank in advance.

Dave

What is the State Of Charge of the car battery ?

test it with a multi-meter 1 hour after the car has been parked.

Can't check right now, but the messages can appear after driving for over an hour. I would have thought the battery would be fully charged by then.

That's not how modern Smart charge systems work on vehicles these days.

Also you are assuming that both the alternator and charging system are working correctly, and that the battery SOC is above 69%

As Unofix says, check battery, you are a 2017, it may be the original battery. Time for a new one

Battery seems ok.

Try it under load

  • Author

Sorry, I assume "Under load" means whilst running. I went to Halfords and asked them to check the battery, that's the pic above. Should I have had the engine running.

And with lots of stuff on

I took the car to my local Ford dealership and explained the situation. They didn't look at the battery, but looked up the codes, suggesting it would need a new steering wheel at £1700 as the above mentioned modules are part of that. Think I will taking it for a second opinion.

  • Author

2nd opinion not available for 1 month. They want to charge £150 just to look at the car.

Decided to put in a new battery anyway, to remove that as a possible fault. Pre-Collision assist not available etc came on the screen after 2 journeys.

Back to square one.

Do you have active park assist or just park pilot?

Are you still getting the same fault codes on Forscan?

I'm not convinced the SASM is 'in' the steering wheel.  It used to be part of the squib/clock spring behind the wheel.

Have you had the tracking done recently?

Is the steering wheel straight when you're driving?

It's moaning it's 9.5 degrees out?

If your steering wheel is straight then perform a straight ahead reset in maintenance and see if it goes away

Ok.  U2002 just means 'general switch failure' and can happen in various modules.  As there's no further detail on that, it does look like the module would probably need replacing.  U3000 is similar, as a 'general internal module fault', without offering any detail.

For that wheel price, I'm guessing you do have an active steering wheel (fitted in models with active park assist) so the SECM probably is incorporated in the wheel for those.

If you can manage without the car for a few days, it might be worth sending the wheel to an electronics test centre for the modules to be bench tested.

(You're welcome to try a steering angle reset first, nothing to lose by trying it)

There does seem to be a slight drift to the left.

The steering rack had sheered while on holiday last year. £2500 to fix that. The steering wheel was working at a 90 degree angle. We had not hit any kerbs / bumps etc that might have caused it. Car was driving ok, but was told, had to have the rack replaced.

Well, it's not going to hurt to have the alignment done and get the steering straightened, then perform a reset and see if that cures it, before you start spending any money

Thanks guys you have all been very helpful. I will look to have the tracking sorted and then reset. I will report back.

Hmm, that changes things a bit.  Those codes may be left over from the rack change, and nothing to do with the recent warning messages.  Had you scanned it with Forscan before the messages started appearing?

Just thinking it may even have been the wheel at fault rather than the rack back then.  The active wheel uses a worm drive against a plastic gear which doesn't look particularly robust.

A worm drive??? Have I got a Spaceship? I know the car is big but....  LOL

No, I didn't have Forscan or a cable before this all started. If things broke, I just took it to Ford, though I am losing confidence in my local dealer / Garage.

Lol.  Worm drive is just a method of turning rotational action into linear action, or vice versa.  The motor in the steering wheel just rotates - the worm drive uses that motion to push the steering wheel one way or the other.

This is only for the active wheel of course.

So I have replaced the battery, and now had the tracking done. Things now seem worse. SW-Angle is now at 21.20.  I did try a reset of both modules.

Although I only get the 2 messages on the DTC tab, there are a number when I connect the ODB to the car. Log attached.

Any ideas?

You've got "U" codes all over the place, that COMMs issues.

Must have a CAN wire down somewhere

Know any Mechanics in the North West? I don't want to take it to Fords.

An update for anyone else that gets this fault.

We had the OSF and NSF Wheel Speed Sensors replaced, and this seems to have fixed the issue. A lot cheaper than have a whole new steering column.

All working fine for over a month now.
