Mk4 Focus 2.0 diesel St Line auto gearbox problems

Featured Replies

Hi. Daughter has a 2.0 St line 2019 47000. Purchased second hand from trader. After 10 moths the car auto box starts to behave erratically. Selecting odd gears and sometimes not pulling away. Tried resetting and getting the box to re learn but didn't work. Took the car to Redhill main dealers; who test drove it and said the car was dangerous ( agreed). After inspection they came back with fault code P2700. They have said it needs a new gearbox; at a cost of £7k. Have contacted Customer protect warranty Company ( bought with car). They told dealership to GO AWAY! as they didnt cover the clutch in the auto box ( serviceable item!) went to Ford for goodwill voucher; they also said GO AWAY!.

I think its a 8F40 box? Which is apparently a sealed unit recommended to be inspected by dealership after 150,000 miles? I understand its not a powershift, but has anyone else had similar problems and got any advice please. Daughter still paying for her car that she cant drive and cant afford to fix.  Thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

If you have a warranty most will cover the gearbox, but double check your terms. They can't use the clutch as an excuse if it needs a new gearbox, that makes no sense.

If it really is the gearbox at fault, which seems odd

Reject the car back to the finance company under your rights.

Call them and tell them the issue

If you don't want to do that

The warranty should honour the gearbox fault, if they won't, complain.

I doubt it's a clutch fault, more a solenoid or fluid or communication fault

Yes, don't mention the word clutch, it has an internal transmission fault which should be covered under warranty

Thank you for your replies. The ca was financed with a bank loan ; so cant go back to them. The warranty company asked the dealership for the fault codes and they have apparently replied that P2700 is a clutch failure and they wont cover it. Even though their policy advertises getting a warranty with them due to the high cost of replacing an auto box !! |?

Either the clutch is servicable, in which case you'll have to pay to replace it, or the clutch is non-servicable in which case it needs a gearbox and the warranty company must pay up.

It can't be a servicable item and need a new box.

Or it's nothing to do with the clutch.

Hi Thanks. This is what I have been telling the dealership (warranty company will only speak to the garage doing the works). Do you know if there are any auto box specialists that will have a lookat the car. I was originally told to take it to a Ford main dealer , as they are the only people that will deal with this box?

They will only fit a new box.

Yes, an automatic transmission specialist can look at it, it possibly needs tearing down.

But I reckon a solenoid is gone

You need to tell the warranty people to stop looking at the word "clutch" and thinking there's a clutch problem.

It's an automatic transmission, it has about 20 clutches.

It's an internal gearbox fault. which needs investigating and fixing, under the warranty you paid for

Yeah I think they are getting confused with a manual transmission.

But first, ensure the battery voltage is good and that the transmission fluid level is correct

Thank you both for your replies. I think I will have to go down to the dealership and talk to their technician.  Would the voltage and fluid levels show up in the code download they did?

Thanks again

I think it is not likely that a dealership would check the battery voltage if trying to diagnose a gearbox fault. A low battery voltage can cause lots of seemingly unrelated faults, yet dealers don't often seem to check this. If the car still has the original battery, it could be contributing to the problems, even if it still starts the car.

The fluid level should be the first thing to check on an automatic.

In my very limited experience, these additional warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on!

The problem with additional warranties is that they are really just an insurance policy wrapped up in the name of a warranty.

And as with any insurance policy, they will try everything to wriggle out of paying up, so be prepared to fight for it.

No, neither.

Battery voltage may be good, static, but when under load, if the performance is starting to drop off, the car will display some poor characteristics.

The absolute first thing to do, before you spend any serious money, is ensure the battery performance is good, under load, if not put a new battery on and reset the transmission adaptive characteristics again AND ensure the fluid level is good AND the fluid quality is still good, if not do a drain and refill
