Firm clutch - normal ?

Featured Replies

Is it normal for the clutch pedal on 2013 ford focus to be quite firm to press compared to other cars?

I had a courtesy car when I had my cambelt changed and the clutch petal was considerably easy to press down, no effort required, when I finally got my focus back, it was noticeably firm, requiring a lot of effort to press down.

Obviously driving the car regularly I'm used to it, but just wanted to know if this is typical?

The phrase if it isn't broken don't fix it applies here, there's nothing wrong with the car, but I've never had the brake fluid changed , simply "checked" the fluid is to good standard.

I'm guessing the clutch pedal pressure varies by car ?

Petrol or diesel ?

Which engine / gearbox ?

I always thought Focus was quite light, so would suggest you have an issue

Try flushing the slave cylinder through, with new fluid.

If that doesn't cure it, it may be a slave cylinder fault or a fault with the release mechanism

Petrol, 1.0 manual , I don't know any further specs. Doesn't get stuck or anything , it just requires a lot harder press compared to other cars I drive. It's due a service so I'll get them to change it anyway, the fluid

With a petrol 1.0 Ecoboost the clutch should be fairly light to press. Sounds like you may have a problem.

See if there's a spring assister on the pedal.  They can go stiff over time.  Some people just remove them, but that does put a bit of extra strain on the master cylinder, with the weight of the pedal resting on it all the time.

On the mk2 and mk2.5 the clutch assists spring had a habit of breaking (it sat in a plastic cup that pivoted with the pedal but the lugs used to break off) which could lead to the pedal feeling heavier. Pretty sure there was a Ford technical service bulletin for it, a pretty tricky job to replace so often left once it failed.

Id expect that the design was improved for the mk3 taking this into account but worth looking at.
