Turbo Blanket/Pipe caught fire removed but is it safe?

Brilliant diagram thanks!

Do you think one roll of the (20m?) tape should be enough? The clips/jubilee clips that come with it are they large enough or do you recommend a pack that are large enough from another link? Size? Also the https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145663517804 is that secured how? And that goes where the red part is?

Brilliant advice really!

I haven't actually done it on this engine, so there is a bit of guesswork from my end.

I think 20 metres of tape will be more than enough for that section.  I reckon you'll only need about 5 to 10 metres, so can buy a smaller roll than the first link.  But would recommend checking it on your actual car to see what you think.

The zip ties provided should fit the pipes.  But if not, you can link two ties together to make them twice as long.  The main thing is that they're metal, as the standard plastic ones would melt.

The premade turbo shield comes with small springs.  The springs have a hook each end which connects the two small 'lumps' together.  That is shown on the pictures in the advert.  As before, make sure it doesn't foul the turbo actuator.

I would also recommend using a pair of gloves, as the tape contains fibreglass which will be itchy when cut.

Also do I wrap the join between the red and the yellow?

You can if you want, but with that being a weird shape I'm not sure it'll hold there.  The overall heat in that area should be reduced considerably by the two sides being covered.

So should I buy this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145663517804 and say 10m of that tape https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175871330545 ? Or just tape do you think the turbo cover (T3 is assume is the smallest size and a bit of a gamble?).

There is a discount code on that tape and 10 metal strips. It seems the metal strips cost a lot on their own? Cheaper to get more with the wrap. As the 20m only has 10. So can you just give this the once over before I set my sights on it? My only worry would be wrapping it and finding I dont have enough but as its just the pipe and swanneck rather than the manifold it should be enough?

I think we finally got there. I will wait for your keen eye to double check all this. Then post the results when it is done of course... 😕

Looking at that, you may be best going with just the tape.  You can see the horizontal metal rod for the turbo actuator underneath the turbo there.  That's the only part that moves.  So I reckon you could get a separate strip of tape around the turbo hotside, above the rod, without fouling it. Ultimately you have the final decision on that though.

10 metres is like 5 people end to end.  That must be more than enough for that section surely.

OK I have bought just the 10m of tape wish me luck I will avoid the actuator. When you say Turbo hotside what does that mean exactly?

The turbo is built from two halves.

The cold side on the right where cold air goes in, gets compressed, and then goes to the inlet manifold.

And the hot side on the left, where hot exhaust gas goes in, spins the turbine, then out through the cat and eventually the tail pipe.

There is a small shaft between the two joining the hot turbine wheel to the cold compressor wheel.

A dangerous un-wrapped Hot Cat

Just wanna say thanks to all those that helped and especially TomsFocus with the diagram! Would have been lost without that. I will remain a member of this forums as its bl**dy brilliant with people who know what they are talking about!!!. This is why you do not need social media and old skool proper forums matter! Keep up the good work. I just drove to my dentist in the next city. Main roads 50+ felt the bonnet when I arrived. Cold! Drove back opened hood touched the cloth (no jokes about touching cloth 💩💩💩💩 but probably went through that with the fire!!! 🤣😂🤣😂😕) and the cloth was warm to the touch. Couldnt be happier...

Again really appreciate your help and above all your patience! ❤️
