Mk2 - Smell of Fuel from Outside Car

Featured Replies

Hi, I can always get a slight smell of fuel from outside the car.

Could the charcoal canister be saturated or there be another issue that would cause this smell of fuel?

Checked for fuel leaks when on the ramps and none identified.

Can only smell when outside the car, not inside.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Any inklings on this please? Thank you.

Does it smells in a front or the back of the car? I guess it's petrol?

  • Author

Difficult to say, REAR I think @Zen23

What are the potential cause if it was FRONT and / or REAR?

Is engine running OK? Not over fueling?

If it's front,  could be fuel lines or seals around injectors. Could be slight leak on connectors.

I didn't have a petrol car for very long time. So someone else more knowledgeable will have something to say.

What engine is it?

Obviously check for leaks from front to back, with the engine running.

Could be carbon can, but I doubt it.

Could be blocked breather, are you having trouble filling with fuel?

Blocked breather where is that located? On the carbon can or the fuel system?

When you say trouble filling with fuel what do you mean?

Not had any issues filling at the pump.

Can here it gurgle or make noises when it's almost full but that's about it.

The filler neck has a breather, if it's blocked then the fuel nozzle keeps clicking off all the time. Carbon Can was near the tank, but not sure on Focus

You know it's not that then.

Just check for leaks, when running, front to back

If you can't see anywhere obvious,  could be on top of the fuel pump/sender unit. Not very easy to check.

Where is this located? Is there a access point via panel in under the 2nd row seats? Or do you have to look from underneath the vehicle on a ramp?

I'm afraid to see it you have to drop fuel tank down. Ford doesn't make it easy.
