Mk2 - Eicher Brake Pads & Discs - SQUEAL!?

Featured Replies

Hi does anyone have experience of fitting Eicher Brake Pads and Discs?

Do yours squeal?

Been searching online and they don't seem to have a good reputation.

My brakes squeal a lot and on inspection they appear brand new!

Some brake pads have anti squeal shims (plasticy layer) at the back. It could be the case yours don't have it.

Oh right I see thank you @Zen23

I will have to remove them to check.

What does this look like? Does it cover the complete back side of the brake pad or is just localised like a pad?

It would have something like this at the back and not bare metal.

Thanks for the image it helps a lot!

So I need to get some better brake pads then that have the anti-squeal shims / backing on them.

No amount of anti-squeal paste is goes to help.

Is the material PTFE / Teflon used? Would anything stop me buying some material and cutting to size and applying myself? However it's probably cheaper and safer just to buy a better set of pads.

Not sure how good is it.

They're the cheapest ***** that ECP sell.  (Or were a few years ago.)

I've had two warped Eicher discs as well.  Wouldn't buy them or recommend them to anyone else personally.

There are two different points of squealing.  One is the pad vibrating in the carrier, which can be damped by copper grease - or in the past decade I'd go with Cera-tec instead.  But the other squeal is the pad material against the disc.  Obviously you can't put any grease on that side!  You can file a shamfer on the edge if they're straight edged.  But if that doesn't work then it's simply the composition of the friction material that causes the squeal, only a new set of pads will cure that.

@TomsFocus I've got Plastilube which I got when I had my Golf Mk5 do you think this would work?

I've had success using that in the past.

@Alan G H apply the plastilube to the back of the pads and on the contact points of the carrier?

Yes, it should work the same.  The reason for no longer using copper grease is the reaction between the two metals.  Ceratec is ceramic based so no reaction from that.  Looks like Plastilube doesn't use any metal either though.

Just on the back of the pads. It's intended to damp the squeal, not act as a lubricant.

*UPADTE* I've noticed that the front brakes are missing the Brake Caliper Spring (1223635).

Would this be another reason why they are squealing?

Otherwise I shall go ahead and buy some brand new OEM pads (2614606).

You'll need the springs anyway, so may as well try those first.

I'd rather run bare backing plates than Eicher pads

**UPDATE** cleaned up the brakes and caliper brackets, applied plastilube and the squeal and squeak has gone. (It also did have the caliper springs present and weren't missing).
