Ford Focus Mk3 Key

Featured Replies

Hi

I recently bought a ford focus mk3 which only came with one key which doesnt have remote buttons. Id like to buy one from aliexpress if i could but not sure which chip is required to make it work.

https://a.aliexpress.com/_EI5jlK3

There appears to be different kinds of chips available.

I am able to use forscan if there is anyway of finding out using that.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Do you mean remote?

The key is separate

FORScan will not program keys anymore

Yes the remote but aliexpress also offer the key cutting service so i would only require to program the key.

There is in effect 3 parts to a key with remote functions.

  • The metal key blade
  • The remote locking/unlocking buttons (requires a small battery to work)
  • The PATS immobiliser chip (no power required).

The working key that you are using at the moment will have embedded in the plastic a transponder chip. If you purchase a remote style key with buttons then the metal key blade will require cutting which should not be too much of an issue. Using FORScan then it will be possible to programme the operation of the remote function for the lock/unlock of the doors.

The problem arises with the need to programme the car to recognise the new PATS chip. Firstly it is common for keyfobs supplied from Aliexpress, eBay, Amazon to not include the immobiliser security chip. This must be purchased separately and fitted inside of the new key. The second problem is that the ability to programme the car for the new key using FORScan dose not work for any Ford built 2013 onwards. For older models it may still be possible.

If it were me (and I've been in that position), I would seek out the services of a local independent auto locksmith who will have the appropriate equipment to supply and program a working key fob. It will cost more than buying an AliExpress one, but at least you know it will work and be stress free. I would budget about €80 or so...

I would still like to try the aliexpress key just out of curiosity, it might reduce the cost of programming since i would already have the key.

2 chips are available

4D63 80bit chip

4d63 40bit chip

which one would i need to pick or how would i figure out which one

Can you let me know how you get on and post a link to the one you get as I to need a second key

I bought a 'cheapie' for my 2005 Focus. The only spec I remember is it being 433MHz, with an ID63 chip (can't remember specifying a 40 bit or 80 bit). Maybe I just got lucky...

So would not be able to get this programmed by an auto key shop?

An auto key shop will have no interest in programming someone elses key - even if they could. They'd want to sell you their own. Someone should have suggested that to you - oh, wait a minute...

Could i even take the chip out of the key i have and place it into the aliexpress key? Would that work?

Yes indeed that would work, IF you could get transponder out of the key without breaking it. The type of transponder that is used in the key you have now (photo above) generally uses the glass tube type which is molded in to the key. Removing it will destroy your existing key and if you break the glass tube then the transponder will not work. The result would very likely be that you will end up with a broken key and a broken transponder.
