Air con coming back on by itself?

Ran the car today to the supermarket, put the air con on for a little while but when I switched the air con button off, it came on again randomly by itself. Turned it off, again, turned back on again randomly a few seconds later.

Also the recirculation (which i left on to preserve the cool cabin air, Aircon off) started flickering on and off. Not flashing, spasticly flickering on and off randomly.

No problems in the past with the Aircon, I run it every now and then to keep it on good condition.

Is this a symptom something is likely failing? It was regassed a couple of years ago and has plenty of cool air left.

I know it turns on by itself if you switch the temperature control all the way anti clockwise. I haven't touched any settings it just happens

    If this is manual controls, the AC automatically switches on if the temp dial is set to max AC or the vent dial is set to windscreen.  Recirc automatically brings AC on in some situations.  Though the flickering does seem more like a fault than an automatic setting.
