Swapping like for like auto'box?

Featured Replies

I'm going to replace my auto'box for a lower mileage, same spec' unit. It's a 2002 Mk1 1.6 four speed. Does it need to be programmed to the ECU or should it be a simple case of plug and play? Thanks for any advice on the swap.

4F21E should be plug and play.

If there is a reset function on FORScan, once fitted, use it.

Are you sure yours is shot and doesn't just need a fluid change and some new solenoids?

Change the fluid on the replacement too

If yours isnt misbehaving, jusy give it a fluid and filter change if it has one, you can then inspect the oil for debris.

Ah, I've just seen my replies and sorry for my lateness. I have had the sump off and fitted a new filter along with two likely drive solenoids (quite inexpensive) that I bought as a package. Since I bought the car in 2018, I noticed the transmission light would come on sporadically, eventually realising it only came on when driving up a slight incline and still persists after doing the aforesaid work. All work done at my friend's garage but I do pay him. It's much better on a two  poster than on my back, I'm too old for that now. We've checked the diagnostics which didn't throw any real good info' back. The fluid is good, as is the fluid level. Local gearbox specialists won't touch the powershift boxes and quite miserly with sharing info'. It only takes a few exploratory ventures into fault finding and good money can be spent with nothing to show for it. I've found the gearbox below, it's low mileage and I think a swap is favourable. The car only costed me £200 six years ago and having never had one of these before, it so impresses me every time I drive it. The aircon even works and just needed regassing by another friend, at cost. We can change the gearbox quite easily but just need to be confident it is plug and play. I understand about resetting the transmission if needed.

Any help/advice will still be appreciated and I thank you very much. Sorry for going on.

Cheers, Tim.

I'm confused now.

A 2002 Focus will not have transmission warning AND will NOT be a powershift?

What car are we actually talking about here?

Dave, maybe I was wrong to mention Powershift, it's just how the box was referred to by one of the local specialists over the phone.

This is for my car, 2002 Mk1 Ford Focus Ghia 1.6 automatic, reg' EA52 LFK. The problem is that the orange transmission light comes on when going uphill at a slight incline but not always. Once lit, I can continue to drive but the car will not change gear once illuminated. I can extinguish the light by stopping and selecting neutral or park, turning the ignition off and then restarting. The light won't come back on until conditions match those previously given. We've cleared the three fault codes that showed. One of the codes was for the crank position sensor which I changed as a matter of procedure, the other two were for gear ratios. These are the solenoids I've already changed. Refer to attachment from early Dec' 23.

you can get the light with fluid level being low, i cant help on this but are there any software updates for your box ????

Incorrect ratio fault normally means a comms fault, not necessarily a sensor.

Check all the wiring (not much on them) to the box is in good condition.

Check the gearbox is earthed

Change the fluid

The top code is for the CAM position sensor NOT  crank!

My money is on a broken wire somewhere! It needs a couple of hours with a good auto electrician to check the continuity on your engine bay harness

If you fit a replacement box, you will still get the same faults

I will make sure it has a good earth. CPS? I just typed it wrongly. Recently got rid of a diesel that I owned. Just a mix up.

I will investigate the wiring tho' and I'll let you know how it goes. A fault there will always be there. I hadn't considered that. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for that.

Cheers 👍

Check vehicle speed sensor too.

I was on a different forum arguing with some guy that thinks CPS means cam pos sensor... i tried to explain the error of his ways - went to look at  parts docs to prove I was correct and Merc agrees with me - but the morons at BMW do call cam sensor a CPS (prats)

By coincidence, I checked the fluid level and found it to be about half a pint over, so we drew that off and so far, so good. The fluid has a great colour, not dirty at all, so I'm happy with that. Early days tho'.

DaveT70, I've got a good earth and cleaned the connections/connectors and with taking the excess fluid out, might have got to the bottom of this.  I'm not holding my breath tho' yet. I'll give it a month and put in an update. I've not checked the speed sensor yet either, will see how it pans out over the next month.

over is as bad as under, keep an eye on the levels make sure its not eating it, colour should be bright and no smell or no hint of burning.
