SMAX Gremlins, Many DTC's

Featured Replies

Please help, I have an 2012 SMAX 2.0TDI 163 Powershift, the car starts fine and will drive fine under very light acceleration. However as soon as any load is applied the car jerks followed by an ESP warning light and a message (or multiple/flashing) message/s saying 'ESP off', normally followed by an "engine malfunction" and "transmission malfunction" the car then becomes difficult to drive and eventually the IPC displays many lights including ABS and the speedometer drops to 0 before finally losing all drive (but engine still running)

I have replace the PCM and ABS modules and also the battery.

It might be coincidental but both the front doors have trouble locking and unlocking when the remote button is pressed.

Any help on this would be massively appreciated.

TIA

A bunch of CAN bus communication issues, some possible fuel delivery related issues, some door lock issues, and misc other stuff...

I'd start with trying to figure out what's wrong with the CAN bus that's causing so many communication failures. A ton of stuff may drop off the list if you solve that.

The Mk1 S-Max (2006-2014) is susceptible to the common problem of cracked solder joints in the instrument cluster. There are two possible different IC models that it may have, one that suffers from this problem and one not. I provide a repair service for this, please check the details to identify if your IC is affected: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314393033915

Have you had the IC repaired before? Sometimes bashing the dash above the instrument cluster will get things working when its misbehaving if its got cracked joints.

It's also possible that you have other electrical issues. There's a lot going on here. A lot of these codes probably have a common cause. There could well be more than one fault though.

Thank you for your reply, the part number for my IC is CS7T-10849-XC or 'type 4' in the link you sent me, am i correct in thinking this model is unaffected?

Yes that's right, type 4 doesn't suffer from the cracked solder joint problem. This problem on models affected by it can cause a lot of interference on the CAN bus, but it seems that all of those communication failures must be being caused by something else.

I'd suspect water ingress / corrosion of the Body Control Module (BCM). It's a common fault on the 2012/2013 Galaxy and so quite possibly also affects the S-max

I have ordered a BCM off ebay and will report back with the results once its fitted. obviously there is no guarantee that a used BCM will also be fault free but fingers crossed 🙂

It will have to be programmed with your vehicles "AsBuilt" data using FORScan

I've managed to sort the problem, I found part of the wiring harness chaffing on a metal bracket, also when rechecking the fuses in the engine bay I found many with corroded legs. I have sorted both issues and now the car drives trouble free :)

Hi dan sorry to jump in

I wondered if you could help me I could be having same issue as you my alarm started going off randomly last week didn't think anything of it .

But when I got in it to drive my front wipers don't work only the jets. Both worked fine before alarm went off .

My climate control doesn't light up or work but it the fans would randomly come on for a few seconds then stop

One of my.front lights also picks up bulb fault and it won't light up but restart the car and it comes back on no problem

Could all.this be related to the bcm I have a lot of codes to

How hard as it to fix i suspect my car has a few demons thanks

Hi Phil, I suffering from a similar issue as you, please post if your problem it's sorted. If I got the solution I gonna post as well. Thank you

Hey Lorant I'm going to be checking as much as I can tomorrow morning if I find anything I will let you know

Thanks

Hi all, I am having basically identical problems as Dan_H. Did anyone have similar simptoms? Does anyone know which metal bracket Dan_H was talking about? Thanks!

Yes, wouldn't it be great if posters told us what the fix was for future people to be able to check?

Presumably you know about the BCM issue mentioned above, if you have the potential issue (remove plug in GREEN socket and check for obvious corrosion).

Otherwise it is a matter of checking for obvious damage where wiring looms travel at passenger side around gearbox etc (PCM is under that side wheelarch and also potential issues at connectors there etc.)

If nothing obvious I think it will need a much deeper investigation with any fault codes, trying to check activation /response of devices using Forscan...
Hope others come back and you can tell us what you find, or not...
