Focus Mk3 Overheating/Common Issues

Featured Replies

Considering the 1.6T Ecoboost, I’m aware it’s got a a dry belt so that’s a straightforward job but what are the other particular problems with this unit? I’d heard they were prone to overheating/blown head gaskets and cracked heads, is this correct or are they a reliable unit? Thanks in advance

Anyone? I’m going to look at one tomorrow.

The early ones used to catch fire after unexplained coolant loss.  They were all recalled and had a low coolant sensor fitted to trigger a dash warning if the coolant level dropped.  It was never really confirmed where the coolant went.  Perhaps there were multiple faults causing it.  This loss of coolant is likely to be what blew the gaskets and cracked the heads.  So as long as you stop if the warning comes up and have the fault diagnosed, the risk of major damage or fire should be significantly reduced.

The other problem with early Mk3's is a low quality clutch centre plate that can break up and overheat and...yes, potentially cause a fire.  These were recalled and checked for any clutch slip (with slipping clutches replaced FOC) and then had a PCM update done which triggers a dash warning and limp mode if the clutch does start to slip.

Overall, they're not a bad engine, and were used in the Fiesta ST as well as the Mondeo and others.  We don't see many issues with them on here in comparison to the 1.0 EcoBoost, but in fairness there weren't so many made.

I'd say the main thing to look for under the bonnet is a low coolant level or any signs of coolant loss from anywhere.

So several years later I guess if it was going to be a continuous fault plenty would have come out the woodwork? I guess it’s a case of monitoring the usual coolant loss.
