Handbrake bolt/cable snapped.

Featured Replies

So parked the car this evening after work and lifted the handbrake to be greeted with a clunk and the handbrake lever going completely loose ie. no resistance whatsoever when lifting and handbrake doesnt engage. Need the car for tomorrow so called AA, mind you the cable is only 6 months old, and the guy said with it being that new a cable it could be the bolt that connects the cable to the level. If this is the case, is it an easy fix as in just replace the bolt or would i need to replace the entire cable?

There is no bolt on the Mk3 Focus.

There's a short cable with a threaded end from the lever to the balance bar like this.

Then two long cables from the balance bar to the caliper, one each side.  And if you've got drum brakes, another small cable each side at the end of the long one.

There is no easy fix for any of that.  It'll need at least one new cable.  For parking you can just leave it in gear for now.  Though if it's a petrol, steep hill starts without a handbrake can be awkward.

When I was much younger, I couldn't afford an immediate handbrake repair, but it sure does teach you car control riding the clutch LOL
