2003 Mk1 1.6 Petrol power steering pump

Featured Replies

Does a power steering pump for the above car use the single use union nut for the output hose?

It is the type mounted at the back of the engine.

Someone I know has a noisy pump and is planning to replace it with a used unit from a lower mileage car.

The fluid level is correct with no obvious leaks, but it looks black from age.

As far as I can tell, some of the bolts mounting the pump to the cylinder head are easier to access from under the car.

Thanks for the reply. The owner isn't going to pay those prices. I have a few more questions that would be helpful to know.

Do both the nut and steel pipe have to be replaced?

Is it possible to remove the pump from another engine leaving the pipe shown at the link connected without disturbing the single use nut?

Can you use regular Dexron 3 ATF in the Mk1 power steering system?

I did a gradual flush with the green fluid on my Mk2. I did it by emptying the reservoir with a syringe and refilling with fresh fluid every 2 weeks until the 1l bottle was empty.

The nut can be sacrificed to save the pipe if you're careful.  It'll need to be held in a vice and cut with precision to ensure there isn't a single scratch on the pipe afterwards.

In theory the pump could be removed with that pipe attached.  I don't know if there's enough space to get it out of the engine bay though.

I'm not 100% on Mk1 fluids specs.  All I can say is that the handbook lists two different specs, both green.  WSS-M2C204-A. WSS-M2C195-A.  It is perfectly possible that Ford have changed the spec since the handbook was printed as well.

When I flushed a Fiesta, I removed the return line to the reservoir and placed it in an empty bottle, blocked up that port on the reservoir, then ran the engine while keeping the res topped up with new fluid, flushing the old stuff into a bottle until it ran clear.  Seemed to work ok but it did move surprisingly quickly so you need to be alert to ensure the pump doesn't dry.

Thanks for the response.

My reason for doing the gradual flush was so none of the pipe connections had to be removed.
