Mk1 Runs OK but Erratic Idle - 1.8 Petrol 99'

Featured Replies

Morning all, again new and first time owner just starting out so bear with if treading ground covered a thousand times.

Have watched dozens of Youtube videos and a lot of useful info out there but wondering about a sequence where to start?

I've put decent petrol in, ran it around town some and now ordered new HT leads and spark plugs from ECP arriving this morning. I've also got an ICV (a Lucas one) on the way and will clean up the throttle body.

There seemed be a few choices of plugs on ECP and I went with Bosch ones, more expensive ones. But which are regarded as best in your experience?

I also read that it's best clean up the ICV rather than replace with a non Ford one. Would that be correct or is swapping for the Lucas unit an OK thing to do? The ICV position looks a bit awkward to get to so keen only do as few times as necessary.

Also is the throttle body clean up worth to do or better to replace? And if I do clean up, what is the best stuff to use to get it right?

And are there any other areas that are worth looking at, these steps aside? Or is there a link to a good guide that can help me get this one behind us? Keen to like this car and do whatever we need to get it a solid unit. Other than the idle it feels a nice robust little unit.

Many thanks

Carburetor clener is good for cleaning just don't get it on your skin.

Regarding ICV, if it's similar to 1.6, it's pipes failing and collapsing on itself under suction.

With such age car you have to check all rubber and plastic pipes.

What's Mot looks like?

Thanks for the suggestions Zen33. MOT is clean bar a long standing advisory on brake pipes looking a bit corroded but working OK.

Good call, I have the ICV on way and have been looking for the accompanying pipe. not managed find one yet but a good call to replace it.

Yes I was afraid you'd say about pipes .... there's a lot of them. But yes will do ... it feels like an air leak of some sort.

Thanks for the advice .... will report back with feedback each step / repair /replacement undertaken.

Anyone have recommendations for suppliers with good quality parts and stock for Focus Mk1 hoses / pipes? Specifically the ICV pipe Zen33 mentions? I'n not sure of the correct name / definition.

Ebay doesn't appear have any but then maybe I'm not using the right definition. Someone must hold new stock

I got those pipes directly from ford as a set, back then it was under £30
