Forscan ABS DTC advice

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Apologies if this appears elsewhere,  have a 2019 1.5 ecoboost with 42K miles on the clock, with the exception of a Halfords installed dash cam there are no further modifications.

A week or so ago I went to start the car only to find the battery was dead, we'd had no previous issues in the 12 months of ownership, a quick jump start followed by a lengthy drive recharged the battery, to cut a long story short had to jump start the car most days, took it into the local ford dealership and they confirmed a new battery was required,

They replaced the battery, reset the BMS and ran diags, no further issues reported.

I purchased a obdlink ex and forscan lite independent and noticed that since driving the vehicle we get DTCs relating to the ABS module.

I've reset the codes but on every drive the following two errors are reported

===ABS DTC U0100:00-28===
Code: U0100 - Lost Communication With ECM/PCM A

Status:
 - Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
 - Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC

Module: Antilock braking system

===END ABS===

===ABS DTC U0401:00-28===
Code: U0401 - Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM A

Status:
 - Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
 - Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC

Module: Antilock braking system

Freeze Frame #1:

-EVENT_TIME: 166861855 s (Mon Jun 3 16:19:34 2024) - Event time

-TOTAL_DISTANCE: 529388 miles - Total Distance

-LONG_ACCL: 0.09 G - Longitudinal Accelerometer Sensor Input

-PBRK_SW: Neutral - Electric Park Brake - Switch Input Status
===END ABS===

There appears to be no issues with the brakes or performance of the car or any lights on the dash.

Are these errors anything to worry about and warrant further investigations, is there anything I can do further via forscan or does it need a mechanic.

Many thanks for any advice

Jon

I'll assume that a "Ford Model Clark" is a bit like a Ford Focus 😉

DTC's that begin "Ux xxx" are in themself not an actual fault. They are data communication errors on the canbus between two or more modules.

In this case he ABS system seems to be having random communication errors. However the issue is not sufficient to turn on the ABS warning light. At this moment I'd not worry, the car will give you a warning if the situation starts to get worse by turning on an appropriate lamp.

Hi Unofix,

Can I be cheeky and pick your brains on another DTC and whether I still have an issue with the battery?

As I mentioned the battery was replaced,  forscan reported the soc as 80%, I've read many posts about stop-start etc and your recommendations about changing the value to 95% etc and charging using a charger.

The car hasn't been used for the past 2 days , forscan now shows the battery state as 72% and the scan also now show a DTC error relating to the BCM, the output is

===BdyCM DTC B1026:93-08===
Code: B1026 - Steering Column Lock

Additional Fault Symptom:
 - No Operation

Status:
 - Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
 - Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC

Module: Body Control Module
===END BdyCM===

No errors on the dash are present and the handling of the car appears to be OK.

Is the battery drain normal and would this cause the B1026 error.

I'll take the car out tomorrow and get it back up to 80% and then rerun the scan.

Cheers Jon

Yes.

Since you were only at 80% SOC and it's not been used for two days, a drop to 72% is normal. The amount it falls will slow down, but of course will eventually fall below 50% which when real issues start.

The DTC B1026 - Steering Column Lock is a little concerning and would be unlikely to be caused just by a low battery SOC. Clear the code with FORScan and see if it returns in the next couple of days.

It's not that easy to just get the car to charge the battery back to 80% as you will find out. It seems the most effective way is town driving with lots of speeding up and slowing down. The alternator charges the battery more when the engine is slowing (over run).

Cheers I'll do as you suggest and see what happens.

Took the car out for some local driving, approx 10 miles, battery up from 71 to 83%, reset DTCs prior to setting off and then reran forscan on returning home, so far only 1 code reported which is the return U code relating to ABS (U0401:00-28)

I'll see how things go.

Cheers Jon
