096 battery instead of a 100 - red lead doesn't reach?

Featured Replies

I've seen quite a few posts saying that an 096 battery fits, but I can't see how the red positive clamp will stretch? This is annoying, cos for another £5 I can get an extra 10Ah.

If anyone can ELI5 this for me I'll be your BFF, or until you ask me to stop

TIA

the 096 and 100 are different case styles, nothing to do with the battery capacity.

This is what you should have fitted if you wanted a bigger capacity...

It doesn't. You move the battery closer to the positive clamp, just slide the battery closer towards the front of the vehicle.

Have I got a different layout? There's no wiggle room in the tray, and I don't want to unbolt the tray.

In pic 2 you can see two plastic guides which hold the reds so snugly to the battery side that I can't even get the red clamp over the post.

This guy has no guides

but then he's got a smaller battery ... on a diesel ?!??

Sod it, I've had enough for one evening. I'll take the air filter hose off tomorrow and take a closer look down the side. Is it me, or is this electrical system more hassle than that on a 60s British motorbike?

I believe when I had my focus it did need some persuasion and I might have snipped some cable ties but it did go in!

When I changed mine the 096 is only about 10-15mm taller than the factory fit 60Ah Ford battery.

The clamp still fit and I had no issues with the terminals. The diesels have the 096 size as standard. I assume you’ve taken the air box out and are sliding the battery bottom lip in to the slots at the bottom of the tray?

Did you remove the red wire just from the top, or did you have to unfasten it from the side as well?

It seems I have an unusual setup 😒

Do you remember if you unfastened the red positive just from the top of the battery or if you also had fixings down the side?

Hope this helps someone else in my position ...

I wish I'd ignored the websites which say I need an EFB100, and just measured the height of the terminals. My original Ford/Varta 60Ah jobbie (pictured in an earlier post) is 187mm, which is an EFB096. The EFB100 is 172mm. Overall heights are EFB096=190mm, EFB100=175mm.

Just to add to the paranoia, mine has a new combo for resetting the BMS, too: 5x flash main beam, then 5x brake pedal.
