Air conditioning problem

Featured Replies

Hi All. New to this site but know the value of forums. Got a Focus mk2 Ghia Estate which has been a great car. A/C failed after 4 years of ownership. Went to specialist who I've used before for recharge. Charges a bit more than others to put dye in. Lasted one day. Went back. Leaking at pipe joint on Compressor. Got seals from main dealer. He fitted them. One day after second recharge still leaking. He said needs either new pipes or compressor or both. Any advice before I start spending more money.

If the system has been emptied again now then you can disconnect the pipes from the compressor and see if you can spot any corrosion/degradation of the aluminium around the pipe connections.  If the pipes still look ok, then it's probably the compressor side at fault.

Thanks Tom. When the mechanic was going to disconnect the pipe Union he said that because it was aluminum it might be a problem but it disconnected easily and had new seals fitted. We were hopeful.

I'd still want to give the pipes another look myself, the mechanic might not have the best eyesight.

Also wondering if they got the correct seals.  Ford parts departments don't always get it right.  They are different between petrol & diesel on Mk2 Focus.  Though I can only find the petrol ones available online myself.  If it's a diesel, that might explain it.  Edit - Facelift are also different from pre-facelift, so again easy to get the wrong ones.

I was very lucky, when my compressor failed few years ago, I just picked up a replacement on Ebay (£25) and it's been working ever since. Don't give up, you can't beat proper car A/C when it's 26c outside!
