2011 focus not starting not battery

Featured Replies

Hi my 2011 focus won’t start newish battery so not that all the lights and radio comes on but when turning of just a loud humming sound any ideas please

The battery being 'newish' doesn't mean anything.  A dodgy module could've drained it overnight.  Worth checking the voltage and even trying a jump start before going any further.

Humming noise needs to be narrowed down a bit really.  It is coming from the start motor?

Hi Tom battery has been checked . This sounds strange but when you turn the key the sound seems to be coming from the rear of the car

Ah ok, that's probably from the tank fuel pump if it's a petrol engine.  The electric pump should prime for a few seconds to pressurise the fuel system.  Generally they make a fairly quiet whine, so if yours is humming loudly then it may be faulty or very low on fuel.  (I wouldn't rely on the fuel gauge 100% even if it's not showing empty.)

If the pump can't produce enough pressure, the starter motor may be restricted by the ECU, though I would expect to see some sort of warning message on the dash if that was the case.

Alternatively, the ignition switch may be faulty, and it's not moving all the way over to start, so it's just stuck on ignition, but there wouldn't be any warning message as the ECU doesn't realise you're attempting to start it.  Is it a keyed ignition or push button start?

It's also possible that the starter motor has failed itself - or one of the cables to it has been damaged.

Easiest option is to put a gallon of petrol in the tank to rule out a low fuel level.  But if that doesn't help then you can either try changing the ignition switch (cheap & easy) or get Ford diagnostics on it to see if that provides any further info for the non-start.
