Head gasket?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 13 plate Ford Focus ecoboost that I’ve only had coming up to 6 months.

It was leaking coolant, there was a hole in the coolant tank so I got that replaced. After getting that replaced and driving it all the coolant leaked out again. Had the mechanic come out and he couldn’t find any leaks.

Drove maybe 5 miles same issue but also the oil light came on flickering here and there and I could feel like the car was suffocating. he now is 80% the head gasket has gone and send that it will probably be worth putting in a new engine.

I have got another mechanic's opinion and he has advised just doing the head gasket also another mechanic had said it could be just be a water pump?

I would appreciate some opinion on what the best thing to do is

Thank you in advance

Headgasket is a major job on this engine.  I don't think it's financially worth doing tbh.  Could also find the cylinder head is cracked or warped once removed.

With the oil light coming as well, it's very unlikely to just be the waterpump.

Ditto Tom's suggestion. In addition to the coolant loss issue, almost certainly the cambelt has deteriorated and the debris from it has partly blocked the oil pump strainer (a common issue and likely reason for the oil light to be flickering).

If you do intend to have any of the very expensive repairs done I would urge you not to drive the car.

Driving it with low oil pressure would most likely wreck the engine.

Do not waste time or money on the engine, it has come to the end of it's life.

You should be able to fit a reconditioned engine for around £2000, or the other option is to sell the car as a non-runner.
