Strange noise , help needed!!

Featured Replies

Having had our van for a few months it has always had a weird noise when slowly braking and van reversing , it's been into dealer a couple times now where it's had everything steipped and cleaned, would anyone be willing to have a look over a video I have taken if they PM me I can send over , trying to gauge opinions, van came back today and it still makes noise

Load your video to YouTube, and post the link on this forum, so anyone can view it.

.

struggling to get my video to upload but ive found this, its a very very similar noise and it is generally when creeping and only ever in reverse , ie into bays or onto my driveway

Is your van auto or manual?

It's a 6 speed manual , 185 if that helps

Ok.  It could be either clutch or brakes in that case.  Both work in the same way with near enough the same materials so create the same noise under load.

If you can get an assistant to stand outside while you drive that may help pinpoint the exact area.

If the van has hill hold or hill start assist, the brakes may be electronically held until you've got enough clutch bite.  As the pads 'wear' in one direction, reversing that direction can cause this groan as the brakes are released, which would explain why it only happens in reverse.

If you can find a flat carpark, try coming to a stop without pressing the brakes or touching the handbrake.  Then select reverse and see if the noise still occurs.

Thank you firstly for the advice , I did ABIT of trail and error this evening on flat ground and reversing just using the bite of the clutch didn't produce any noise, I tried this several times however no noise.

I think tried doing the same again but pressing the brake slightly just feathering and the noise happened every time, even discovering if I got the bit of both just right the noise could be carried out for a length of time.

Obviously only doing this for short amounts to no risk damaging clutch etc.

Would this seem to suggest issue with braking, noise definitely appears to come from the rear, not too sure how to move forward as apparently it already had discs and pads just before we purchased, could it be worth suggesting they fit a non OEM set but still decent quality ?

That does seem to confirm that it is coming from the brakes.  Though I wouldn't consider it to be an issue or fault as such.  I can understand it's irritating to hear, but won't actually be causing any real damage.  It's just like brushing carpet pile the wrong way.

There is some chance of the new pads not having been fitted perfectly.  Some of them have an adhesive backing which should ensure they get pulled away from the disc completely after releasing.

It looks like the genuine Ford ones don't - but Bosch ones do.  (Unless that's just a stock photo)

I don't think the discs will be causing this, and wouldn't change those if they're still in near new condition.  But replacing the pads would be the next step if you can't just put up with it.

Just to update and gauge a response , have had the van into the dealers again this week and due to pick up, I demonstrated the noise and explained how it happens, ie I der what conditions etc

They have now replaced the slide pins as they believe this to be the issue, what do you guys think about this as a potential cause ?

I'm obviously dubious and due to have a phone call with them as it's a 120 mile round trip to the dealer and really dont want to be wasting my time .

The slide pins could be holding the pad too close to the disc in theory.  But on a 4 year old van, I would also be sceptical of that being the cause.  New ones probably cost less than 120 miles worth of diesel though.

Hopefully can find out if it's been properly road tested and got the brakes hot, yeh 4 year old with 34000 miles on, we've done about 7k of that, I managed to find a YouTube video of slide pin brake noise and I would say it sounded very similar, I'm not entirely sure how slide pins fail to be honest

On most newer Ford's, there's a small rubber sheath on one of the two slide pins.  The rubber breaks down over time and then makes the pins sticky instead of smooth.

I guess the theory is kinda stacking up that perhaps they could have been sticky, as I did start to hear brake grumble without pressing the pedal, so potentially suggesting the pins weren't retracting fully or maybe slightly skewed anyway, fingers crossed and I suppose if it's had poor maintenance prior to us getting it then maybe the issue

Well van collected today, and apparently they have changed all they are willing to cover FOC and the noise is still there. Main arguement being that they are safe and working so not mechanically at fault, not sure which approach to take now as don't want to be accepting the noise however hitting a wall with them
