Mk 2.5 egr valve petrol 1.8

Featured Replies

Hi

Just wondering if anyone can offer some tips on solving a egr problem.

Bit of background. Engine management light came on. Checked codes and it advised EGR valve issue. Did a little research to find out it's either blocked with carbon or the valve is stuck. My first port of call was to just try some egr valve cleaner and spray it down the air intake to see if I could get lucky and clean the valve. Completed this, reset the codes and took the car for a little spin for an hour.

Next day the engine management is back on, same codes.

So I'm thinking I'm going to have to take the valve off, check to make sure the valve is closing and opening using a pressure pump and obviously clean it out. Problem is I've never taken the valve off.

Has anyone come across a decent guide on YouTube etc that will give me some guidance? Or does anyone have any other tips?

Thanks

If you have an ODBII Bluetooth reader, you can do live data and check if EGR is opening / closing using the Torque app from prey store.  Otherwise, use decent wired ELM 327 cable and Forscan on your laptop.  Otherwise:

>Remove battery earth terminal and Engine Cover.

>Remove Air filter to throttle body rubber pipe.

> Pull the electrical plug from EGR.

>Next, either drain coolant or get ready to plug coolant pipe that you going to remove from EGR.  Someone else can maybe confirm, I can't remember, but you may be able to keep coolant pipe attached to throttle body prior to removing EGR?

>Finally, remove the 2 x bolts holding EGR onto head.  Bolts are 25Nm when retightening them with torque wrench.

Cheers.

Thanks for that. Really appreciated. Odd thing is, I checked the code again this morning and it has gone but been replaced with p2008 which is,

p2008 intake manifold runner control circuit open bank 1

So I checked the intake manifold controls and checked them with the multimeter and they are both closed circuit so I guess they're working ok ?

Had an issue on a 2009 2.0l petrol where a vacuum switch controlling either the swirl flaps or egr failed.  Not sure which one but are sold as a pair.
