Power Steering not working. Galaxy 2017.

Featured Replies

Hello.

I have an issue with the power steering on my 2017 galaxy.

The car was hit on the A post but no damage behind door or wing. The fix was easy as i just replaced the wing and door and got them painted.

Ever since the incident the power steering doesn't work.

I don't understand why a knock on the side would cause the power steering to fail.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached some code which the bodyshop was kind enough to get the neighbouring garage to get for me/him.

Thanks in advance.

The power steering module is just a PCB with a few electronic components soldered on.  Easily damaged by a shockwave through the car, even if not hit directly.

The other problem on these is that the wiring corrodes near the plug.  So a sudden jerk could've snapped the wires completely now.

Has the PAS motor & wiring been checked for any visual damage?

Was the wheel hit at all?  And if so, has the wheel alignment been done since?

Hi Tom.

Thanks for the reply.

I will check the pas motor and wiring tomorrow and update you.

I think the wheel may have been hit so i will arrange for a wheel alignment.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Tom.

Got the wheel alignment done today and i still have the same issue.

Also all wires seem ok, no corrosion.

To add the wheel did take some impact by the looks of things.

Also the front wheels judder/twitch 2 or 3 times when you turn the ignition on.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sadly, if there's no damage to the wiring then I think your only option is to replace the steering module.  I think that is incorporated on the rack along with the motor on this age of Galaxy, so it won't be a cheap fix.  It may be possible to swap the motor and module separately if you can find those available to buy anywhere.  Might be worth contacting a rack refurbishment company to ask their advice on this issue.

Edit - Also worth checking any fuses for the PAS if not done already.  Thought they'd been mentioned in the first post but now see they weren't.  Though the fact that the motor is twitching when you switch the ignition on does suggest it won't be a fuse issue.

One more thing Tom. Are these steering racks coded or anything like that or can i get one from any other 2017/18 galaxy?

Thanks.

That's probably another question for a rack specialist.  As far as I'm aware, these ones aren't coded to the car, but will need to be relearned to find the full lock positions and synchronise to the steering angle sensor in the steering wheel.  That can be done using Forscan or possibly the scantool shown in your earlier photos.
