Engine light on (Amber) indicates Lamda oxygen sensor issue.

Featured Replies

Hello.

My daughter bought a ford focus Mk3 2013 1.0ltr car last year.  It runs well but we have a problem with the oxygen sensor (I dont have the code, but it is the first one, bank 1 I think).

History:- A few weeks after buying the car my daughter noticed that the engine light came on.  We contacted the seller.  He came around and reset the code.  After a few weeks it came on again.  He then came around and replaced the sensor.  The light remained off for quite a while, and we thought that the problem was solved.   Then my daughter did not drive it for a week .  The next time she started it she noticed that the engine light came back on.  She took the car to a friend with an OBD scanner and the code suggested that it was the same sensor.  We contacted the seller, and he did not respond.  The light is now off (friend reset it).  But I am sure it will come on again in the future.

Ok, so I'm wondering whats best to do.

I used to have a very cheap scanner, but it packed up a while ago.  I do intend to buy another one.  I dont want to spend hundreds.  I am looking at the Foxwell NT302.  It can record live data and I figured that it might be useful.  Although I probably would not understand the live data, I might be able to come on this forum and get some help understanding it??

So my first query is, any suggestions as to which scanner I should consider buying?  Price probably less then £150, but the Foxwell NT301 for about £56 looks ok and its not something I would need to use very often.

My second question is should I just go ahead and replace the sensor again.  The sensor the seller installed does not have any brand markings and was probably a really cheap one.  It might be that the sensor was cheap and nasty and just failed?

I think its probably some other issue, but replacing the sensor would at least eliminate that possibility!!!?

As I say the car is running fine.

Any suggestions as to what I should try to do to help identify the problem?

Thank You

If you browse this forum you will see that the experienced members all recommend FORScan. It's a free download for a Windows laptop or a small charge for a version that works on a smartphone. You then just need an ELM327 cable costing about £30 or a dongle for the phone.

Forscan can read all Ford-specific codes on both the HS ans MS CanBuses. Generic code readers don't. For functionality it's the next best thing to Ford's own diagnostic system.

Use FORScan and a Windows laptop. Connect using the 'vLinker FS' cable if you want full results and programming capability. Or use one of the phone versions and the correct bluetooth dongle which gives the same reading ability as the windows version but no programming.

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.
