Forgot to say that it's a Ghia.

Also is this a common or known fault?

You haven't said what the fault is?

It's rare to need a complete new heater box.  That requires the entire dash to be removed for access.

Dash already out awaiting part ... Mechanic says it's as handy to get the whole thing in.

What was the fault?

Only place you'll find a full HVAC box is eBay or a local breakers yard.

I'm not exactly sure... I went to collect it after having some other work done and it sprung a leak on mechanics forecourt and after investigating he came back and said I needed that part and he was having a hard time getting it

Finding it hard to get one .... Would one from another year or trim level work?

Is there another work around like an a/c delete?

Ok, if it's leaking coolant then the heater matrix has probably split.  It's basically a tiny radiator inside the HVAC box.  Fairly common on all cars as they get older.

Heater matrices aren't usually difficult to get, plenty of aftermarket manufacturers make them.  Though with this car being 20 years old, maybe the parts are no longer made.

There are several different types of HVAC box.  For example, manual dials climate boxes are totally different to automatic button type climate boxes.  So a lower trim level probably won't work.  Other years from this model should work, so I'd guess that's around 2002-2006, but Galaxy's aren't really my area.

It is easy to bypass the heater matrix in the engine bay using a U bend to connect the pipes together.  But then you will not get any heat inside the cabin.

For reference, this is one type of heater matrix for the Mk1 Galaxy.  Should be the same as Sharan & Alhambra of the same era.
