Screenwash added to brake fluid reservoir. . . . .

Featured Replies

Carelessly added screenwash to the brake reservoir on a 2021 Focus. Car was then driven 10 mile round trip before realised and had brake fluid replaced by a mobile mechanic who said that there was a lot of air in the system and he couldn't drain much fluid when he pumped the brakes. Should I be concerned? Does this mean I need to take the car to a garage to see if they can drain the brake fluid and replace?

Yes, it needs to go to a garage that can perform a service bleed using a diagnostic tool to open all the valves in the ABS pump.

So approximately just how much screenwash did you add to the brake reservoir ?

About 50-100mls and a bit of water for good measure 👍 The mechanic has reported that "brake fluid has been replaced and bled out but there wasn't much fluid coming out, could be because there was a lot of air in the system, test drove the car and breaks (sic) seemed to be working perfect (sic)". Is it time to call the garage for another brake change with a ramp or can I afford to relax?

The brakes can not be bleed on your car without first using diagnostic equipment to activate the ABS unit and open all the valves. There will not have been any air in the system. Take it to somewhere like a Halfords Auto Centre and ask for a brake fluid change (£49.99)

How much do Ford charge for a service bleed now?  If it costs £50 at a generic chain I think I'd just use the main dealer.

Arnold Clark offered to do mine while the car was in getting it's first service for £84 that was back in 2021. Most Ford dealers are so busy you would probably have to wait at least a month just to get an appointment.

My last one was a couple of years back but then it was £39.16 incl vat at my usual Ford dealer.

Is this why they're known as Arnold Shark?😀

Main questions everyone wants to know is......

''Was you drunk when you did that''  😂 😆
''Are you just covering up the fact your missus did it'' 😝 🤭

Some years ago a friend of mine was topping up their oil through the dipstick tube!!! She said it was taking ages 🙄

That speaks volumes about Ford reliability.

That's nothing. Had an owner of a mini who filled the engine up with oil until it was level with the filler cap.

My mam did exactly that on her morris minor! Me dad went mad at her but her excuse was she was talking whilst putting the oil in..... 🥱

Back in the days when 2 stroke motorcycles used a "petroil" mix rather than an "autolube" system with a seperate oil tank, most filling stations had a separate hand operated pump which dispensed the correct amount of oil per gallon for the given ratio - 25:1, etc.

I stopped at a filling station and asked the attendant to put in a "gallon of 2 stroke" while I popped into the kiosk. When I came out I found he had done exactly that, and was still pumping neat 2 stroke oil into my tank! I made sure to "supervise"the operation after that.😀

I was one of those attendants at our village petrol station when I was around 14. Squirt the 2 stroke oil in . Ours had a dial to turn so you could have varying amounts per squirt from 10/1 to 50/1.  1 squirt per half gallon. And same for Castrol r.
