just changed cabin filter but........

Featured Replies

hi guys

i have watched a video on changing the cabin filter and on the video i had to ttake the glovebox out and the lower the fusebox. changed the filter no problem but noticed there is an ac pipe that connects to the glovebox but there is no way i can think off to reattach the pipe. so i have left it off as i cant get my hands under the fusebox or put my hand to the side as it is so tight space.

after i have change dthe cabin filter, i went to look at more videos and this time, the person only took the fusebox off and didnt even need to take the glovebox out. doh!!!!

question is, can i just leave the pipe off?

many thanks guys 🙂

Am posting this for no other reason that if anyone does a search and finds this thread, this video may be of use...

That pipe is for the cooled glovebox.  You can leave it off, but your bottle of water will end up tepid. 😱

Many thanks guys. To be honest I have never used the glovebox for anything other than storage for cds, papers and cloth.

That video is the one I watched and realised I didn't have needed to take the glovebox out 🤬

I like the series of 'carspy' videos. He doesn't assume you have previous knowledge, and explains thing very simply with good close up camera angles. Yes, some may think that patronising, but sometimes we need a bit of patronising!

First time I watched his videos and I admit, he does explain very well.

It never ceases to baffle me why car designers make consumable items so awkward to change.

i totally agree, it was a pain to change it but at least next time, i wont need to take the glovebox out.

There was a car once on Car SOS (but I'm dammed if I can recall what car) where the engine oil filter could be accessed from simply opening the bonnet, and also engine drained from a dedicated from a built in pump, again accessed from the top. I thought even then, if my car was that easy, I would change the oil myself much more frequently...

It's a very good system. Works well and avoids mess. Our 50-year-old boat engine has one as accessing the sump plug is virtually impossible as is getting a tray under to catch the oil. Interestingly the marinisation involved adding a water-cooled oil cooler and that required the oil filter housing to be repositioned. It's angled upwards so the oil drains back out of it when the engine is stopped which makes changing the filter very easy and mess-free.

Quite a few cars had the oil filter at the top for a while.  (1.6 TDCI Focus and 2.0 TDI Golf for example).  Means the oil changes can be done with a suction pump down the dipstick tube and just whip the filter off the top.  Undertray hasn't been off my Golf since before I bought it in 2018...

Sadly the newer Golf moved the filter underneath.  Makes it quicker and easier for the main dealer techs using a lift, but prevents us doing a hassle free oil change unfortunately.
