Powershift Help Please

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I have a ford S Max 2010 2.0 petrol powershift, it was driving great, I had the gear oil and filter changed for piece of mind, and since then it has been juddering in 1st gear when it's warm and when accelarting quite hard, if I take off slowly this doesnt happen, but when the car is cold, it doesn't judder at all, and this only happens in 1st gear. Other than that, it's very smooth and has no issues in changing gears.

Does anyone know what the issue may be or how I can fix it?

Thanks

Are you 100% sure you put the correct fluid in?

When you changed the oil and filter, did you get a chance to see if there was any yellow/off white plastic debris in there? To be completely honest, the symptoms you are describing are very similar to the ones I had, except that my RPM fluctuated whilst driving on CC at a fixed speed. (and shifting to reverse was also jolting like crazy)

This is going to be hit or miss, but you could try to use Forscan and do a shift fork relearn and clutch system learn. Hit or miss, because that very action increased (or rather uncovered) my issues and made it far worse to the point of not being drivable anymore. For others I know it worked out and made shifting smoother, but then I guess they did not have the debris in their boxes.

I do think your gearbox is subject to the same failure all us powershift owners will face sooner or later. The torque convertor which acts as a dual mass fly wheel in the housing, has springs and plastic retainer clips in it, which are not fit for purpose. The plastic shatters, pollutes the gearbox as it's chewed up through the gears and eventually will clog up the mechatronic and valve body. If you are technically inclined, you could remove the gearbox from the car and tear it apart, replace the plastics, and very (very) thoroughly clean the mech and the valvebody, was well as replacing the internal filter. The parts and oil will set you back a few hundreds. Having this done by a pro will cost you 2500 to 3500.

I am part of an FB group for this specific gearbox and all of their issues, the Getrag MP6 DCT450/470 box. If you want I can share some links pertaining to this issue

Hi sorry I've just seen these, I did get the correct oil in, all I was told was that the oil change looked like it was well overdue. Some times it doesn't judder when taking off, but I do also get short vibrations at high speed.

Just keep a very keen eye out on any juddering, clunking noises from the gearbox and the dreaded "transmission limited function' message on the dash.

When you get the vibrations at high speed, so you see the rev needle shifting up and down by +- 200 rpm while you speed remains the same? This is an indication that your TCM telling the box to disengage the clutches, causing them to slip slightly.

Also, how many miles has your car done? The clutch pack would last up to 200.000 km's typically when 'nothing bad' happens 😉

What I can think of is to much oil .
If mostly happens with warm engine it might be worth to recheck oil level

I had the oil drained and a flush done by an automatic gearbox specialist, they put 7L in.

Just putting 7l in doesn't sound good to me if the correct procedure was not followed absolutely?
As the other options are so unpalatable and expensive, I would take the advice above and either get your specialist to check the level (showing you that they follow the procedure) or check the oil level yourself or get someone expert in this exact type of transmission to do it.
It's not rocket science but the procedure does need to be followed, just draining, and filling with 7l or using the level plug outflow as a guide just won't do it due to the dual level/two chamber design which I assume you know?

Beyond that, you may need (again) specialist help from an expert with extensive experience of the Getrag Powershift?
Sorry, I don't have a Magic Wand!
