Mk2 - Whirring Noise

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m getting a whirring noise at high speed.

I’ve just replaced both wheel bearings at the front but still getting a noise.

Could it be the driveshaft?

I’ve also replaced both driveshafts so I’m not too sure what else it could be possibly a bad tire or unbalanced wheel?

You got vibration through steering?  No, not wheel balance.

You got enough oil in the gearbox?  Could be the main and / or input shaft bearing, diff bearing or just plain drive train noise that the IB5s are famous for, if it's the IB5?

My mk2.5 has made a weird drivetrain whine for the last 10,000 miles but doesn't seem to bother it since doing the clutch.

So could it be the clutch needs doing or should I check the transmission oil level? There is a slight vibration through the steering wheel.

I'd check oil level in gearbox first.  You need to remove plastic cover which hides access to the plugs first.  DO NOT remove that plug where the red mark is in the photo I stole from another post on here.  Remove the blue plug above, if oil starts running out, it's full.  If nothing comes out, top it up.

I wouldn't worry about the clutch unless it's either: slipping, juddering severely when lifting pedal to drive off in 1st gear, excessive grinding noise in neutral, which goes away when you press clutch pedal.

Slight vibration through steering isn't a worry, if you'd messed up the offside driveshaft support bearing, you would know about it when you got above 40mph.

Thank you @Bar72 I think it’s lost oil from the box when I did the driveshafts.

I did top it up via the fill plug you have pictured. But since then the shaft seal has been letting oil past it.

Must of damaged it on removal of the nearside driveshaft.

Oddly the offside shaft seal is ok.

I’ve got 2 corteco replacements on the way to replace them.

Then shall top up the transmission oil again and hopefully the noise goes away.

Otherwise gearbox bearings must be knackered but I really hope not.

Never done a gearbox rebuild but if required I’m happy to tackle it.
