MK1 Focus coolant leak from rear of engine 1.8TDCi

Featured Replies

Please tell me this can be fixed, and if so, how. Decently competent on repairs and tools, but always willing to learn more. This is under the exhaust manifold. Car overheated last time it was driven (few days ago). Limped it home, thankfully wasn’t far. Didn’t have any warning lights come on, just the temp gauge hitting red. Once engine was cool, coolant reservoir was completely empty, added a bit of water to test, definite leak. Wasn't able to actually get out and look at it until today. Have removed engine cover, turbo cooler, and turbo cooler left hose to access this area. I *can* replace head gaskets on cars, but I really really do not enjoy doing so. Thanks in advance.IMG_1097.thumb.jpeg.b8fbb1683d3c5ca53eae2e450f702299.jpeg

Looks like a core plug.

They're just a press fit, so knock one out (tap an edge inwards) then knock the new one in using an old socket for even pressure.

The problem with that one is going to be access space though.

Looking at the rust residue on the block, it may have been leaking from the same place for a while.

That could well be why it overheated.

Thank you for the replies. The general consensus across everywhere I’ve asked is that it is a core/freeze plug. I think I’m going to loosen a few bits enough to move them over so I can have a bit more space to access it. I don’t know if I can get to it from above, but there’s both much below it, so I may try from below.
