Rear speakers not working

Featured Replies

Hey guys so I have a 2009 ford focus (UK) and my rear speakers aren't working anyone know where the fuse is for them or how to change them as a last resort

Thanks

The speakers do not have a fuse.

In addition, have the speakers worked, then stopped? If they have never worked, your car may not even have rear speakers fitted depending on the specification it was built with...

I am pretty sure they have blown as they did on my missus car. Both at the almost exact same time. Thought it was the radio unit but changed it to no avail.

This was a common problem with the Mk2 speakers. The lower spec cars were fitted with lower quality speakers that are known for burning out.

The radio had a built in program to test the speakers which can be found on youtube. It has also been posted on this forum before.

The Ghia, Titanium and ST were fitted with higher quality speakers. You can easily tell the difference as the better ones have dark blue plastic cones. The lower spec cars had black paper cones.

It's a strange coincidence that this thread was posted at 11:49am yesterday. I was just starting to remove a set from a scrapped 05 plate Titanium at that time. These will be replacing the blown rears on my LX.

The rear door cards will have to be removed to change the speakers. These are held on by plastic clips which are difficult to remove without damage. Does your car have hand wound or electric rear windows? If it has hand wound, the handles have to be removed which is not easy.

The speakers are held onto the pressed steel window regulators with pop rivets. These have to be drilled out to remove them. I replaced these with M5 rivet nuts and bolts so they can be easily removed again if needed.

As not everyone will have access to a rivet nut tool, there are a few other ways the replacements could be fitted. You could also either:

  • Replace the pop rivets.
  • Remove the window regulator and use ordinary nuts and bolts.
  • Drill suitably sized holes in the plastic speaker bodies and window regulator sheet metal and use self-tapping screws.
  • It may also be possible to drill out the holes on the speaker bodies to 6mm and force M6 bolts into the 5mm hole on the sheet metal. I wouldn't do this myself.

Hopefully this post helps.

As I said earliest, my LX never even had them fitted, as demonstrated by shining a torch through the rear speaker grill! Anyway, pretty sure we have a OPW on our hands here 🤣

I have an original brochure from 2005 which says the LX had four front and two rear speakers as standard.

The Sony head unit with 8 speakers was listed as an option on the LX.

while on the subject of speakers whats the point of the little pod speaker on my hatchback rail

You are absolutely correct!! Just went out to mine to check using a bright LED torch through grill, and I do believe that I can see a 'black' speaker cone. All these years I just thought I hadn't got any fitted, now I conclude they simply don't work 🤣

Definitely 'after market', Ford would never leave an exposed cable like that. Do they work?

Think that's a KGB or CIA listening microphone 🤣

ive no idea if it works or not, just the one. best be careful what i say in the car

Now that is weird. I wonder if a previous owner had wired some kind of microphone to it so they could pacify a young child in the back?

Looks like an aftermarket parking sensor beeper or trailer buzzer to me.

This is a common fault.

There's no fuse, the speakers just stop working. I had this with my 2008 model. To test I removed the radio and swapped around the cables on the quadlock connector front to back. There was no issue with the radio.

There's a good youtube video about Focus speaker replacement. I ordered a pair of Pioneer speakers from Amazon similar to those in the video. I followed the video for the installation and all works good now.

Good Luck.

But this thread now runs to about 20 posts, new folk just read the 1st, then jump right in with both feet on their response 😂 Who can be bothered to actually read it!
