Timing belt, water pump and ?

Featured Replies

I'm having a timing belt and water pump changed as I type.

Is there anything else that should be changed while doing this process ?

I seem to remember reading something about a mirror seal or something like that? Sorry, I'm not good with mechanics..

Thanks!

also changing the other 2 belts

Probably a bit late to ask for any extra services half way through the job.

You may be thinking of the crankshaft seal.  That doesn't really need replacing unless it's leaking though.  If it is leaking, hopefully the mechanic would see it and ask if you want it changed.

job done 230€ (parts+labor, but no receipt of course) DAYCO set - it seems there are 2 DAYCO, with different gaskets ?

service guy said gasket did not need replacing, just applied some glue - seems strange he did not change it, no ? will ask him tomorrow

also said that one Continental belt (5PK690) is not suitable for these motors actually as they are torn a bit while installing or something like that and he put on a Gates one

crankshaft seal not leaking he said

That is a very good price.  Labour rates must be fairly low where you are?

It was probably the waterpump gasket that didn't fit.  Should be fine with sealant, I used to go belt & braces by doing gasket & liquid sealant.

yes, waterpump gasket (previous waterpump was a Ford one with a plastic component)

if I want to check which belt he has put, how can I do that ?

coz I see it can be:
https://www.autodoc.parts/dayco/222332 and
https://www.autodoc.parts/dayco/7202043

different pricing between the two and I guess different quality

You would have to remove the plastic timing belt cover to look at the belt directly.

The High Tenacity belt (better quality) is white underneath, whereas the standard belt is black underneath.

Don't forget the car came with the standard belt originally.

called him, he doesn't remember, he said to call him again (I hate it when mechanics dont show me the boxes, invoice or anything that makes a solid proof of what's been actually used)

I will check what he has installed

can I check the water pump too ??

it seems that models pre 2005 have different part numbers (mine is 03/2005)

If he 'doesn't remember' then it probably was the standard belt.

The water pump on this engine is run by the auxiliary belt.  So you can see a bit of that without removing anything.  Though it is very tight at the side of the engine, may be able to get a small mirror in there.  It's underneath a big black pulley wheel.  All you can really check for without removing it is leaks.  Can't see whether it's plastic or metal impellor without removing it.

The mechanic might get a bit annoyed if you keep checking up on his work.  (Unless that's specific to the UK lol.)  My motto has always been - If you want a job done well, have to do it yourself!

Been quoted 1400 pounds from Halfords to replace wet cam belt includes water pump any Teeside businesses do this cheaper ? Ford focus 1.0 Eco boost 2012 ? Much appreciate advice on reputable garages etc thanks

I see your profile says your in Yorkshire, and I know Yorkshire people like to be careful with their brass, but you might need to put an extra 's' in Teesside 🤣

There are garages that are doing the work for around £900, I think @Eric Bloodaxe might have some details

You mean the one mentioned in this thread, I assume?

Incidentally a pal of mine has been threatening to get a quote from his usual local independent for some time. I'll report if he ever gets the below item or his engine blows up, whichever comes first. He's in West Yorkshire, though.
