Glow plugs - hot engine a must?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

i'm in the process of removing glow plugs on a S-max 2008, 2.0 Tdci.. Everywhere i read the engine must be hot or at least warm to increase chance of succesful removal of glow plugs.

I have had one glow plug non-functional for about a year and a half. There is probably quite a bit of carbon deposits sitting there.

But i'm wondering, as i couldn't remove the EGR and the Cooler quickly enough to get at the plugs with the engine still hot.

Now i'm wondering if i should try to warm them up with a hairdryer or a torch or just give it a go with the wrench & gentle 30Nm setting on the impact..

i guess i can answer myself: No, not neccesary to have the engine heated. I just got all four out.

Took about two hours.

i did it with a mildly warm engine, too hot and youll hurt yourself, mine came out without a fight
