Focus 1.6 Zetec Melted Wire?

Featured Replies

Unfortunately unable to attach a jpeg because it's over 2mb. I've uploaded it to an image host.

I was looking around in the engine bay and saw this. Has obviously melted and definitely doesn't look salvagable.

I've had no problems with the car but coming across this I'm naturally concerned.

That part of the loom could be salvageable, as it's not too difficult to patch in new wires, but that's only part of the solution. You need to discover the causality of the melted wire. By rights, the protection system (i.e: a Fuse) should have prevented this, so that needs to be addressed, or the same issue will again arise, once the wiring has been replaced.

To add: this is a potential fire hazard, as I'm sure you'll be aware.

Do you have any ideas what this cable is for because I don't think it was ever connected to anything. I've had this car for almost 2 years and I've never noticed anything go wrong with the car, no lights have come up no problems starting the car, operating the radio, fans, blinkers not nothing. I'm gonna cut it to stop it from resting on the exhaust manifold.

Ah, so the fact that it was resting on a hot surface, it why it's melted, you think? That would do it, and yes, you need to stop that, to prevent a potential fire. I would still clip the melted wires back to an area where they are not melted, then isolate the wire ends, with some electrical insulation tape and make sure that the tape can't get damp/wet, or it will simply fall off. Just because the loom is not connected to anything at the end which you can see, do not assume that the wires can't be 'live', given the correct circumstances.

If it was never connected, then it's as likely as not, that it's for an option that was not fitted to your car. I'm not familiar with your MK, but I'm sure that there are other members here, that will be.

Thank you for your help, I've clipped back the wires, placed far away from the exhaust manifold and insulated them, glad I found it.
