Notchy steering only on a cold start

Featured Replies

I've got a 2013 mk3 ford focus navigator estate. It's got a strange steering fault that only occurs from a cold start, when I turn right there's a resistance and a notchy noise around the 12' oclock position of the steering wheel. after a littlte driving (maybe about 5 miles or so) the problem goes away. I've checked the level of the power steerling fliud that's OK. I've replaced the battery as someone advised that could be the problem (the steering rack is electric). What could be the problem?

Which engine do you have?  Mk3 Focus only came with fully electric or fully hydraulic steering.  There isn't any fluid for the electric rack on these.

Hi TomsFocus, Thanks for the prompt reply. My MK3 Focus is a Titanium Navigator Auto 1596 cc (1.6) first registered December 2013, I'm the 3rd owner, only had the car since April this year. I was led to believe that the steering rack is electric, however if the there is power steering fluid then it must be hydraulic (my bad for thinking it's electric). TIA

Yes, the 1.6 Ti-VCT is the only engine in Mk3 to get hydraulic steering.  So there is no electric assistance on your model.

The resistance around 12 o clock position is a common sign of a worn steering rack unfortunately.  The rack will need to be replaced to cure it.

You can buy a used rack but there's no guarantee of that one being any less worn.  So most people buy a refurbished rack instead.
