Unusual fighter jets sighting - F16?

Featured Replies

Up in Wensleydale at the mo and the RAF and USAF were putting on their usual display while I was out walking this fine morning. The usual Typhoons and F15s were doing their low level stuff, then a couple of other jets appeared. Unfortunately at that very moment my sunglasses decided to fall apart! 😠 and they were some way off so I didn't get a good look anyway. I did though note that they had a single tail fin and looked like F16s which have been very much in the news lately of course.

Any of our aircraft enthusiasts know if there are any on a visiting deployment here at present, as has happened in the past? Or any other ideas?

I did get a confirmed sighting of an Atlas yesterday - it was at treetop height right over my head so I could hardly miss that!

You could try the https://www.flightradar24.com/ website.  Though I'm not sure if local military stuff shows up.

It depends whether the transponder is on or not.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, probably depends what they are doing/why they are flying at the time.

Try radarbox as well if it's not on flightradar

No joy there this time, though it did show some RAF transport activuty. Perhaps it depends what they're up to as,Alex suggests.

There are various exercises run with our NATO partners (some of whom still use Soviet bloc stuff - saw some MIGs a year or so back).

I believe the Belgians brought some F16s over for one of the Cobra Warrior exercises last year so could have been something like that.

That's brought up a few Typhoons as well as A400 Atlases so does seem to show military.

Whatever I saw will have done their lap and landed somewhere long ago of course. Just trying to confirm what's in the country so I know my eyes aren't deceiving me

I use ADSB Exchange for military stuff. If you click on the U at the top it only shows military aircraft (inc U2 Dragon Lady aircraft).
There are some exercises planned at RAF Leeming in the coming weeks which will include some night flying.

I wish I was still at the railway as I'd get a good show as they take off and land.

Well, someone** has just obliged by flying an F16 past our caravan window!

**Far too fast to pick out the markings, but at least it's cleared up what it was!

Can't see an F-16 on radar up Wensleydale.
There is however ZK365 EF Typhoon out from Coningsby but that flew up the dale at 40k ft.

Lol, just seen a Typhoon but it was most definitely not at 40k feet! These guys are just clearing the trees when I see them round here, and I often look down on them when walking on the slopes of the Dale.

As the object of the low flying training is presumably to avoid radar detection, quite possibly they simply don't show up.

Very possible but they usually show up once they come back up. The only other aircraft I could see that went through the dale was Hawker Hunter ZZ190 based at Leeming. It went west and then came back east.

Interesting. Well, so far today I've had 2* pairs of F15, 2* pairs of Typhoons,  and 2* pairs of what I now am pretty sure were F16s. No sign of the Hunter though, would have loved to have seen that!

*Could be the same pairs twice, of course.

We had the red arrows fly past the house a few days ago and they didn't show up on any flight radar apps/ websites. Very often get a400m very low level.

I have seen the Red Arrows show up on those types of flight tracking apps before, but usually only one of them, probably the lead plane.

I live fairly close to a regional Airport, which they often use as a base when in the area, so maybe they have to have the transponders on within a certain distance of the airport.

But I've also seen Typhoons and things on the app during Airshows too.

Oh, and spitfire/hurricane normally show up on flight radar even at low altitude. Most  years I see them probably 4 or 5 times. Only once this year so far.

There's a local  wartime event held each year just outside our town and the hurricane, spitfire , wellington do a couple of fly bys.

Edit, getting my bombers mixed up, is it the Lancaster that's still flying with the spitfire and hurricane.

Cosford air show in June?

May have been going to or from there. They do various fly bys in one flight circuit

Think BBMF spitfires and hurricane still grounded from the spitfire crash. Lanc I believe flying for Eastbourne this weekend.

So what's this flight for? Does it every day this week. And at night time too. Just gone overhead for another go.

I did initially think Google mapping but not in the hours of darkness?

Surveys. Probably topography or some other sensor which doesn’t require daylight rather than photography.

It’s RVL Aviation in their Cessna 406.

If you are curious and on Facebook there may be a local Plane Spotting group that posts on there that you can ask. I'm not one but posts from my local one keep popping up on my Facebook feed for some reason

Appache helicopters out in pairs last night too. Screenshot_20240814-221417.thumb.png.7bfb00a7bd2b92df6276af6d435ad095.png

Yeah, I see a lot of those around.

I'm back home now, and can see a lot more activity on flightradar here.

I guess it's just the usual issue I have up the Dales - internet and mobile signals are very poor/ intermittent. I can see now for instance, a Hawk flying around having left Leeming.

Ah well, it actually makes it interesting up there - you hear something, then woosh!
