Humming noise while driving.

Featured Replies

So the issues keep coming with my focus. She is old though. 58 plate 1.8 duratech

I’ve got a humming noise while driving can hear it very loud while driving slow but it’s always there. Took some stills from a video as it wouldn’t let me upload it and wanted to show and see if anyone can see what the cause is or if it’s a separate issue as there is grease dripping.

That's the driveshaft oil seal.

If enough oil has leaked out of the gearbox, the diff will be louder.

Though that leak doesn't look particularly big.  So it might just be coincidental.

So could the humming sound me something else? Can’t see anything wrong with breaks, the discs or tyres and I’m also getting a vibration through the pedals when am driving

Constant humming is usually a wheel bearing.  They can't always be felt by 'shaking' the wheel on modern cars.

That leak does need attention either way.  Not much point in topping up the gear oil without replacing the seal first.

Wanted to note when I got the car it was pulling to the left. Garage said it was one of my front tyres so they swapped it with a rear. Was after that I’ve started to get this humming noise. It’s really loud at slow speed but you can still hear it at high speed but not as loud

Change the wheels back over and see if the humming stops 😉

In olden times, we used to associate humming with a failed wheel bearing. More recently it can also be associated with odd wear on one or more tyres.

I should have added - by odd wear, look for feathering on the tyre edges.

That's an odd thing to do.  If a tyre has worn unevenly it shouldn't just be moved to another corner.

It could even be the tyre tread pattern causing the noise if it's a different model to the previous one.

Cheap tyres with directional V patterns are notorious for road noise for example.
