Engine Malfunction light - advice please

The 'engine malfunction' light on my S-Max has come on while my friend's borrowing the car. A mechanic in France hasn't found anything wrong and the car is running fine. She's due to bring the car back Thursday night and then I'm supposed to be driving it to the Lake District Friday morning (about 280 miles). Trying to get a diagnostic first thing Friday morning but the mechanics around here are busy. What would people suggest? Is it a terrible idea to drive to the Lakes and get it looked at when I return?

    It really depends on what's thrown the light up.

    Until you read the codes you won't know.

    Could be daft, could be drastic

    The easy answer and by far cheaper than paying a garage to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) would be to buy your own lead, or dongle for FORScan and read the codes yourself.
