Power steering pumpfailure - Been advised to scrap the car?

Featured Replies

Hello - I am new to this forum. Apologies if this is not the right way to go about this:

2004 Mk 1 Ford Focus. 80k miles. 1.6 petrol Automatic. One gentlemanly owner before we bought it. It is a mint car. However, the power steering pump has started leaking. I bought a new one but the mechanic said the car is scrap because the pipe leading into the pump cannot be ordered new. He has to break the pipe to get the pump out and you have to fit a new pipe. He talked to Ford and they do not make them any more. He said, you cannot remove the pipe from the pump without breaking the pipe/seal which means if you remove the pipe you have to order a new pipe. But because they do not make them, the car has to be scrapped.

He has replaced the switch but this has not stopped the leak.

Do you have thoughts on this? How do I get a new pipe going into the new pump? It's a real shame because the car is mint and very low miles. He quoted me 230 quid just for the pipe and this is assuming you can buy a new pipe but Ford assured him the factory responsible has shut down. And there are no pipes anywhere!

We are in Essex and if there is a mechanic who can offer us an alternative that would be great.

there are many small backstreet engineer shop making allsorts of now allegedly obsolete parts. AS far as i know its hydralic pipe with metal fitting which should be make-able by someone .

If you love the car and its worth it its worth spending on, try a scrappers for replacement pipes then find someone to manufacture.

Mine is very low mileage and in great condition so i have no qualms in spending on it.

you could simply go to any grown up company that plays with hydraulic pipes and make up a decent fitting instead of the ford push fit disaster

I bet you can find a solution on ebay

loads secondhand

this is new - you'll need to do homework
