Intermittent Hum - Mk3 1.5 TDCI

Featured Replies

Hello all,

So I bought a 1.5 TDCI privately a couple of weeks ago.

I have done a couple of long journey's - the car has driven flawlessly (81.5mpg on one journey!), apart from a really annoying hum coming from what I believe is the front drivers side.

It is low frequency and intermittent. By that I mean it is on for a full second, off for a full second. I can't hear it at low speeds but at higher speeds, it's there.

It doesn't change when I am accelerating or braking.

It's got me scratching my head. Surely it can't be the usual culprits (wheel bearings, CV joint, tyres, brakes) if it comes and goes so regularly? It had a brief look at all the external trim - it looks to all be there and attached properly.

It is overdue a service so I am going to get that sorted when the parts arrive - I will have a look under the car at the time. The discs and pads also need changing so that will give me a chance to look at the wheels more closely.

Any ideas in the meantime?

Thanks.

Why can't it be ????

What mileage has the car done ?

Well I suppose it can be, but my assumption would be a constant noise for those issues, not intermittent. Wheel bearings in my experience have always been a constant whine/drone.

The car has done 65k miles
