Braking system upgrade

Featured Replies

Good day.

Could bigger discs fit to the Mk3 (1.0 M1DD).

Should also the calipers be changed?

Think you’d be best looking at the ST discs and calipers as these would be a straight fit onto your steering knuckles etc. May need spacers for wheels to clear them.

If you’re feeling especially keen you could even go for the mk3 RS parts

So these fit the 1.0 model?

What about changing only the discs?

Some info here on brake upgrades, bigger discs would need matching caliper brackets

...change the original 278 mm brake setup to the 300 mm brake setup
bought a pair of 2016 Kuga 300 mm front caliper brackets...

Based on this post, that is the best change that can be done.

There are several ways to upgrade the 278 mm front disc brakes:

The 300 mm front brake upgrade is a straight fit that requires different discs and brackets. The calipers and brake pads are identical to the 278 front disc brakes.

The 300 mm front disc brakes are fitted to:
* Focus MK3 / MK3.5 1.6 ECOboost, 1.5 ECOboost and 2.0 TDCI.
* Kuga MK2 / MK2.5 FWD

The 320 mm front brake upgrade is a straight fit that requires different discs, brackets, calipers and brake pads.

The 320 mm front disc brakes are fitted to:
* Focus MK3 / MK3.5 2.0 ST (Both Petrol and Diesel)
* Kuga MK2 / MK2.5 AWD

The 335 mm front brake upgrade is a straight fit that requires different discs, brackets, brake lines, calipers and brake pads.

The 335 mm front disc brakes are fitted to:
* Focus MK3 / MK3.5 2.0 ST (Both Petrol and Diesel) with Performance Pack

The 350 mm front brake upgrade is a straight fit that requires different discs, brackets, brake lines, splash shields, calipers and brake pads.

The 350 mm front disc brakes are fitted to:
* Focus MK3.5 2.3 RS

I performed the 278 mm -> 300 mm front brake upgrade (brembo discs combined with ATE ceramic brake pads) on my previous Focus MK3 and was quite satisfied with the result.

So the brackets are necessary to be changed for 300mm discs?

You said you bought 2016 Kuga ones?

The brackets will offset the caliper further from the centreline of the axle to match the bigger dismeter discs 👍

The correct brackets can easily be identified. The brake size is casted into the brackets.

I bought a complete used set of calipers and brackets from a 2016 MK2.5 Kuga FWD.  The complete set was considerably cheaper than a single bracket from Ford. Since I only needed the brackets I still have a set of spare calipers on stock.

Are these brackets sold as parts to auto parts stores?

Or only ford dealers and used parts shops sell them?

The discs will hit the caliper mounting brackets, you need to change the brackets

But a 1.0 doesn't need them, not enough power, not enough weight and I wouldn't recommend 300mm fronts if you have rear drums

But I know you won't listen

Rear are discs.

Power now is more than 155hp (more than 1st remap).

Actually that is why i am asking.
