Roof rails coating flaking off

Featured Replies

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can advise? I've got a 2011 Focus Mark 3. It's got roof rails for want of a better word that have a coating. This coating now beginning to flake off exposing the metal underneath, I've attached a photo.

Is it possible to replace these? I'm not sure how they can be removed. I thought I found something similar on a youtube video but it was for an American Ford not even a Focus and that was a very involved job that required removing the headlining together with resealing the bolt holes afterwards which would give rise to the possibility of leaks into the cabin.

For this age of car and it's overall condition I think it's not worth doing that type of involved job but I wondered if these can be simply unclipped and new ones clipped in? Or failing that, could the old coating be removed and then some wrap be put on top?

Thanks

George

Hello, can anyone advise? Cheers George

If it was my car, my 1st port of call would be a local body shop to get a quote for a couple of coats of satin black. But then, I have no paint skills, and am fairly lazy 😂 Masking up should be pretty easy being a straight line!

They do just clip on.  There might be some adhesive at the ends as well.

The clips look surprisingly elaborate for such a simple part!

New gutter trims come with new clips, but they are over £100 each.  They are also different for hatch and estate so you need the right ones.  One hatch trim linked below.

Must admit I thought they were just plastic.  But I guess they must have an aluminium core looking at your pictures?  I reckon they're made to such a tight tolerance that wrapping won't allow them to refit.  And paint doesn't easily stick to aluminium.  I wonder if the best idea is just to carefully remove a better condition pair from a breakers yard.
