Mk2 57 reg dodgy speedo dial

Featured Replies

Hi all , first post and I can only imagine cluster issues have been covered to death but ...😅

My speedo dial has always been intermittent.  Will freeze regularly and doesn't move smoothly round the dial . Can be noticed more above speeds of 30mph and when braking as the needle will not reduce speed on the clock accurately.

I also noticed it is more prone to play up during warmer weather .

I regularly sweep the clocks to 'reset' the guage.  It never sweeps at first attempt but after a few efforts it will settle at zero .

All other guages work perfectly,  have never had a problem with any of them.

Would this suggest the cluster solder is the culprit?

Many thanks

Apologies if my post is something which has been covered here already . Every cluster issue I've came across online has had other symptoms , immobiliser faults etc .  My other clocks all operate as intended.  Odometer all etc work fine

Has the cluster been taken apart previously, what you describe is possibly due to the needles not being fitted properly. look up disassembly and reassembly making sure the needles are refitted properly.

Thanks jimpster,  I'll give that a read through .I'm not sure if its ever been apart . When I bought it , the speedo was stuck on 100mph and the previous owner said it had been that way a while.

I simply did a sweep and it worked nicely for a while but it's got worse over time.  In fact it's currently not moving at all. Just hovering above 0mph and occasionally lightly juddering between 0 and 10mph

I expect you're experiencing a rare case of a bad gauge motor that's occasionally snagging. I provide a repair service on ebay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314393033915). Out of the 250+ units I've worked on, I've encountered symptoms like you describe only a couple of times. Replacing the motor fixed it in those cases.

Definitely a bad motor, I received the unit for repair today and found the culprit, a mangled gear:
