Ford Focus Mondeo MK4 - automatic gearbox problem 8F35 8F40

Featured Replies

Hello,

We all know about problems with the new Ford automatic gearboxes 8F35 and 8F40.

Has anyone solved or know the reason of jerking and similar problems when shifting gears?

In my case, fuel consumption is over 8 liters, gearbox is jerking (more when its hot), and also 2nd and 3rd gear is almost like no

difference (almost same RPMs). When I shift to M, manual mode, and driving normally on the straight road, RPMs are going up and

down (about 50-100RPMs), like im pressing and releasing acceleration pedal.

Has anyone detected, is this really because the faulty transmission and has to be changed or you got another reason?

Presumably a metric European country.  It's about 35mpg.

Yes its about 30mpg (but this is about diesel engine, not petrol)

That's American MPG, based on the US gallon.  We use British gallons over here, meaning our MPG is about 15% different to theirs.

I don't have any advice to offer on this fault though.  It does like the gearbox is faulty.  Hopefully Dave will see this thread soon and be able to offer something useful.

Dave moved to BMW:) Joking

I would like to hear other owner experiences. Someone who had or have the same problem.

Ive got the same problem. I have a mondeo titan 2.2 s 2010. When driving on a motorway and in say 6th gear and release the accelerator pedal then after a couple seconds put my foot down again slightly the car jerks.

i changed the throttle body thinking it may have been that but it wasnt. But the gears in the old tb were buggered anyway and was stuck open all the time so i had a rough shut down on the engine. Ive re learned the tb but still it jerks. Im thinking maybe it could be the accelerator pedal postion? I were reading the sensor on forscan and i think it were position D were fluctuating without me putting the footdown

Its a different gearbox. Its not 8F40. You probably have powershift.

HI, I have Focus my2020 and same problems with "gearbox" unless it isnt.

I just had it serviced and changed TOURQE CONVERTER (german Wandler) infront of the gearbox and its fixed.

It seems alot of people have this problem and Ford still don*t recognise that it might be FACTORY ERROR. the service cost about 3000€ in my country (oil change is mandatory + work and small parts change)

They called today that car is fixed and I drove it exactly in this one Ford service because it had been repaired this kind of problem just few weeks ago.

Ford said the same for me its propably the torque converter but they insisted a full transmission change for 3 million huf (slighly 7500 eur)...

Did torque converter change solved the problem for you? Mine is 2020 Galaxy

@xray328 If you're still around (sorry I missed this one) there seems to be people getting trouble with the torque converters on these transmissions, but if you're at very high mileage consider changing the fluid and adding some Lubeguard Transmission Fixx (two tubes) and ensuring your battery is fully charged.

HI Dave, I fixed mine Focus. It was Torque converter. Like Davore said, 3000 EUR of repair costs. Its a Ford problem, think they should recall those automatic gearboxes if they want to be a serious car producer.

Yes, in our country almost all Ford services insisting to whole transmission change. This is crazy. Find a Ford service who want to change only Torque. But be sure its a Torque.

Hi Dave,

I have the same issue on my mondeo mk5. But if I read your reply correct, is it possible that the battery being in poor condition can influence the shifting characteristics on this transmission (8F40)?

Many thanks!
