Insurance claim - right or wrong?

Featured Replies

A couple of weeks ago my car was reversed into causing a split/cracked front grill and a kink in a wheel arch. Details exchanged and I put a non-fault claim in against the other driver.Estimate came in at £1500 but nay have been overestimated on paint. No visible paint damage. My fiesta is only 11 months old. Having lived with this for 2 weeks I'm now thinking is it worth it. Would anybody else have claimed and should I continue with it ?

If the other party were willing to pay for the damage themself then I would certainly not have put a claim in. It's too late now as your insurance company knows about it.

You can look forward to your insurance premium being hiked up next year since "you" had an accident even if it wasn't your fault.

I concur. A few years back, I was in a parking space in a shopping center waiting for her to return. Whilst sitting minding my own business, another car reversed into me, not big damage at all, but MY insurance company persuaded me to agree to a 'no fault' for expediency. I was hounded for the next 3 years renewal as that's how long it stays on your insurance record till expunged. Worst advice I ever took...

Thanks. Like for like comparison between non fault claim and no claim on quote comparisons is only about £10-£15. An increase can be negated I suppose with a higher excesss. Got full NCB.  In fact my renewal was due a few days later from said incident and my insurer said no difference in original quote as it was open.

UPDATE .  My renewal this year only went up by £12. All recorded as Non Fault . I know prices with some other firms have dropped a bit in the last few months but stuck with same big name as they got everything sorted quickly with minimal hassle from them. The only delay I had at the time was from the Ford approved repairer of my choice.

This "Non Fault" thing does not make sense.

My car was locked and factory fitted alarm but was stolen - how can that be an owners fault, but I was still penalised and NCB went down from Max NCB (9 years or more) to 4 years NCB.

Surely if your veh is left all correct, then stolen it should be classed as "non fault". Also you can't even claim any excess back from the other party like you can with a non fault accident claim

Take your point. There should be another status such as All Reasonable Steps Taken which would have less impact on the owner. My insurance took my side straight away and did not even ask for any excess while liability was being established. They paid out for the job and recovered all costs from third party insurance and confirmed the database is updated with Non Fault status.

Not necessarily so. My insurer, when someone drove into the back of my car writing it off last year, said my NCD not affected, premiums won't be affected, and excess will be waived.

If the car is only 11 months old then it must be repaired properly to maintain its anto-corrosion warranty.

Insurance co. needs to be notified in case the perpetrator later puts a claim in against you claiming that you hit him! n(People do lie you know, surprising as that may seem).

And - there may be hidden damage under what can be easily seen.

Yes, you thinking on the same lines as me. Anyway, a year on from the actual incident and repairs just pleased to share that the claim was ultimately worth it as the effect on premium was only very, very slight and car damage free.

The "non-fault" thing is about collisions, not theft.

Richard, yes, I am aware the "non fault" is about collision but that is why I see it as being unfair, as said. it's not the policy holders fault if ones car is stolen - if your veh is left all correct, then stolen it should be classed as "non fault". Also you can't even claim any excess back from the other party like you can with a non fault accident claim.

So, unless you have protected NCB you lose out on a serious amount of NCB and any chance of re claiming ones excess, but have done nothing wrong
