Oil leak Transit Custom

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I recently bought a used transit custom from a well known Ford dealer. I've noticed oil dripping from the engine after it's been driven. The dealership are telling me it's just excess oil from when they changed the wet belt a few weeks ago.

Is that a thing?

I've had the van 3 days. The drips occur immediately after driving. The oil dip stick is showing a shade over MAX.

Do I need to be pushing harder with the dealer? Or is what they're saying true?

Pic attached. The oil looks like it could be coming out the engine casing where the pulley is. Pic taken from driver side wheel arch.Screenshot_20240906-122143.thumb.png.68e5289acf9b58333ae6e4fadf4e49ad.png

Take it back ask them to clean it properly like they should have done, you will then be able to monitor if it is still leaking.

The highlighted pulley is the AC pump, so it's not coming from there.  And it's definitely more than a little spillage from a belt change.

I reckon it's coming from the crank pulley seal.  Comes as part of the belt cover as far as I remember.  Do you have a belt invoice that lists the parts changed?

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I do have a parts list from the work they done before purchase, but it's quite non-descript. There's a couple of seals mentioned - a Google search of the part number suggests they're door seals though. Would you expect to crank pulley seal as a separate item on there?Screenshot_20240907-085621.thumb.png.91782ea28807b8dcb34642297be3a0e0.png

The crank seal is part of the timing belt cover.  And that is listed on there, so has presumably been replaced.  It would all need to be cleaned to see exactly where the oil is coming from now.  It could be a faulty seal, or maybe the liquid seal around the edge of the cover was not done correctly.

What is concerning is that there's no mention of wetbelts in that list.  The £8 v-belt is just the aux belt.

Hi, thanks for the reply on this. The van is now back with the dealer to be checked over. It looked like the level on the dip stick had dropped - so sure you guys are right. I've asked them to confirm the wet belt was definitely changed too. I guess it's included in "cover-timing belt". That line item looks to be a similar cost to the kits you can buy including timing belt and cover. Hopefully they'll confirm that tomorrow.
